Despite its troubled launch, a good number of Cyberpunk 2077 players have already finished the game

Based on CD Projekt Red’s recent earnings call, it was revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13.7 million copies, which is quite the staggering amount for a game that suffered a less than favorable launch due to its many well documented issues. A further breakdown by industry analyst Daniel Ahmad shows that 7.67 million copies was attributed for PC, 3.84 million for PS4, and 2.33 million on Xbox.

Let’s quickly assume that 1 copy sold = 1 person playing the game. That begs the question – Despite its troubled release, how many of these people who purchased copies actually persevered and played through the game? Surprisingly, quite a lot of people didn’t mind the state that the game was in.

I personally know of a number of people who have purchased the game but haven’t touched it since, as they’re waiting for either the next-gen version or a fix for the many outstanding issues. Some players, on the other hand, have enjoyed their hard-earned copies since Day 1 and have gone on to finish the game, bugs and all. I’ve actually finished the game multiple times, both during and after my review.

*Note that the Witcher 3 percentages are from a bigger player base compared to Cyberpunk 2077.

Compared to CDPR’s massive hit in The Witcher 3, the amount of players who have finished the main storyline have about the same percentage. Cyberpunk 2077 has 23.6% (Witcher GOTY has 23.9%), which is around 906,240 players who have finished the game on the PlayStation 4 alone, which can be attributed to the shorter main campaign that CDPR highlighted before. This number is even more impressive when you consider the fact that the game was removed from the PSN store last December, meaning there could have been more purchases and possibly more completions.

Moving onto other platforms, the Xbox has a slightly higher completion rate with 25.99% and given the numbers from earlier, that amounts to a healthy 605,567 players. Interestingly enough, Witcher 3‘s completion numbers are far fewer on said platform, with only 14.82% of the total player base having completed the game.

Of course on the PC, it would be a different story since Cyberpunk 2077 appears on multiple storefronts like Steam and GOG but for purposes of easier computation, let’s go with the numbers from Steam.

25.9% of Witcher 3‘s player base have completed the game and on Cyberpunk 2077, the data shows a staggering 31.4% completion rate. In numbers, that is 2,408,380! Considering that the glowing reviews for the game came from the PC version, which was the most “fixed” version at the time, it isn’t any surprise that majority of the Cyberpunk 2077 population are on the PC version.

You can throw shade at the game for being incomplete or a buggy mess, but the numbers don’t lie. That is almost 3.7 million players that have seen Cyberpunk 2077‘s ending through game completion on all three platforms, or nearly 1/4 of the total sales figures, assuming a 1:1 copy to player ratio.

Just for science, here are the alternate ending completion trophies / achievements for the PS4 and Steam. Take note that we won’t be going into specifics on which ending is which because, you know, spoilers and stuff.

Cyberpunk 2077 Alternate Ending for PS4

  • The Devil: 2.8%
  • The Star: 11.9%
  • The Sun: 8.2%
  • The Temperance: 6.6%

Cyberpunk 2077 Alternate Ending for Steam

  • The Devil: 3.9%
  • The Star: 14.5%
  • The Sun: 11.6%
  • The Temperance: 8.3%

So, should you go ahead and take the plunge and play Cyberpunk 2077 already? That’s quite the loaded question, but if you’re on the base PS4 and Xbox One, we would suggest steering clear of that version. The bare minimum you would want to go for will be the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X versions, with the PS5 and Xbox Series versions next. CDPR have promised that next-gen versions will arrive later this year, so PS5 and Xbox Series owners have something to look forward to. PC, of course, is the best version to play it on given you have the hardware for it, and the numbers shown here are clear as to which version the gaming public prefers the most.

Cyberpunk 2077 is currently out for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia. It is currently unavailable digitally for the Playstation store, but you can still purchase physical copies of the game from your nearest retailer.
