After being met with outrage from the community about not even having an upgrade path, Horizon Forbidden West will now offer a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade.
A statement by none other than Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan on the PlayStation Blog has said that “it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark” and will stand by its original offer to have free upgrades for the cross-gen launch titles, including Horizon Forbidden West, even though it has been delayed to 2022.
While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.
Ryan also continued to clarify that moving forward, any and all first-party exclusive games that are cross-gen (Physical and Digital, will release for both PS4 and PS5) will offer a $10 digital upgrade path from PS4 to PS5. The statement specifically includes the next God of War, Gran Turismo 7, and “any other exclusive cross-gen PS4 & PS5 title published by Sony Interactive Entertainment”
While not free, this is certainly good news and something that has been corrected from its initial Horizon Forbidden West offering where the upgrade required a much more expensive version. The issue stems from the fact that the base edition of the game does not even have an option to purchase the upgrade.
What do you think of this decision by Sony?
