PS3, PSP, and PS Vita stores reportedly shutting down in a few months

If there’s are game from the older generation of PlayStation that you’ve been eyeing for quite sometime now but haven’t picked up yet, now would probably be a good time to do so. Sources familiar with the situation say that an announcement planned for this month will reveal the closure of the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita storefronts, cutting off the ability to purchase games for those systems.

This report comes from TheGamer, who have verified the source of the information, saying that the PS3 and PSP stores will be closing on July 2 while the PS Vita store will close at a later date, August 27. Unless you own physical copies of titles from the said consoles, the only other way to purchase games would be through their digital storefronts. Once this happens though, the games will still be playable but there won’t be any way to purchase them anymore.

It is quite sad that the PlayStation 5 has no backward compatibility reaching the PS3 and below, which would have undoubtedly been a great addition to its current system, especially if this store closure pushes through. Maybe Sony has some plan to integrate these titles into PS Now or some other service? Sadly, all we can do is speculate for the time being.

No official announcement has been made by Sony about this, but if the report is true, we don’t have to wait for long as the announcement should come in a week’s time.
