Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart wows with 15 minutes of new gameplay

We were promised a deep dive at Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart on today’s Playstation State of Play showcase and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Much of the game focused on its PS5 features as well as the introduction of the new playable protagonist, Rivet, and her gameplay.

Needless to say, the game looks absolutely gorgeous and feels like something straight out of an animated movie. We also got a closer look at one of the key levels in the game– Nefarious City — where Ratchet infiltrates to search for Clank. There’s quite a bit of exploration seen in this game versus Ratchet and Clank (2016), where every level kicks into combat and you get to explore only after you’ve cleared the combat challenges.

Speaking of Rivet, we get to see her in action, and she uses her hammer rather than Ratchet’s wrench but pretty much has the same move set with slightly varying arsenal such as the Sprinkler, which you could feel with the haptics. There’s also a mode where Rivet rides on the Speetle that serves as another mode of transportation through various swamplands by way that Ratchet uses a hoverboard in the previous games.

Increased mobility has also been featured here, allowing Ratchet to wall run, dash, and hover. This also seamlessly transitions into combat, where the dash function can serve as a dodge where you gain limited invincibility to get between your enemies and allows for more dynamic action in an already action packed game.

Suffice to say that Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart also takes advantage of the PS5 technology seen recently in Returnal, mainly with the use of the adaptive triggers’ half-press and full-press functions.

In Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, making use of the half-press and full-press will trigger your arsenal’s primary and secondary functions. Take your regular blaster, half-pressing it will default to a semi-automatic single shot while a full-press will move on to a rapid fire. A shotgun blast will default to a single shot on a half-press, but a full double barrel blast with a full-press.

Much has been said as well with the 3D audio capturing all the sounds and ambient noises for each of the planets, the haptic feedbacks to push immersion with weapon use, and finally because of the Rift Tether mechanic that Ratchet and Rivet utilizes to move between dimensions, the ultra-fast SSD will instantly load completely different planets with no load times.

We can’t wait to see more of what Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart has to offer, because based on the gameplay video, there seems to be so much more to do! In between the open areas to explore, glitch and arena challenges, aerial combat, pocket dimensions, photo mode, and accessibility options teased at the end of the showcase, Rift Apart seems packed with goodness from start to finish.

Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart launches exclusively on the PS5 on June 11.
