In case you’re still reeling from the fact that Activision Blizzard is now under Team Microsoft thanks to a monumental acquisition deal, you’re not alone. The whole gaming industry was left in shock at the recent turn of events, and with the smoke slowly settling down, it seems that there are still questions left to be answered.

One of those questions pertains to Sony and how they could possibly recover from this. For context, Call of Duty is one of the top-sellers for PlayStation year in and year out, so it is understandable that this deal will leave a massive hole in their pockets.

Sony has finally broken its silence, albeit in a rather succinct statement. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, a Sony spokesperson had this to say:

“We expect that Microsoft will abide by contractual agreements and continue to ensure Activision games are multiplatform.”

It’s very short and straight to the point, and it is almost certainly a given that these “contractual agreements” will be fulfilled, in the same way that Microsoft did with Bethesda.

It doesn’t say much, especially with what happens after those agreements expire.

On the other side of the fence, Activision has also shed some clarity on the situation, stating the following via an employee FAQ that details how this acquisition will impact existing agreements:

“We will honor all existing commitments post close. As with Microsoft’s acquisition of Minecraft, we have no intent to remove any content from platforms where it exists today.”

While a tad bit clearer, it still does not definitively lay out the specifics as to what happens once the ink on the deal is dry, especially when terms like “existing commitments” are used.

Whatever the case may be, it is to be expected that this acquisition deal will have far-reaching consequences in the industry. It would be interesting to see how Sony will (or will not) respond to this.
