Netflix acquires Oxenfree devs Night School Studio

Netflix has made it known that it plans to get into gaming, and although it will do so at its own pace, moves have already been made by acquiring its first studio to create games for them.

Announced by the streaming giant and Night School Studio, the developers of Oxenfree will be joining the streaming giant but have ensured that the upcoming Oxenfree II will still release for the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

There’s no news yet on what the team will be working on but one thing that was confirmed is that the game will have no ads, no in-app purchases, and will be part of your streaming subscription.

Netflix VP of Game Development Mike Verdu shares that “We’ll continue working with developers around the world and hiring the best talent in the industry to deliver a great collection of exclusive games designed for every kind of gamer and any level of play. Like our shows and films, these games will all be included as part of your Netflix membership  — all with no ads and no in-app purchases. Stay tuned for more.”

Night School Studio co-founder Sean Krankel expresses his joy over the acquisition, saying “Night School wants to stretch our narrative and design aspirations across distinctive, original games with heart. Netflix gives film, TV, and now game makers an unprecedented canvas to create and deliver excellent entertainment to millions of people. Our explorations in narrative gameplay and Netflix’s track record of supporting diverse storytellers was such a natural pairing. It felt like both teams came to this conclusion instinctively.”

Are you looking forward to this partnership? What games are you hoping to see come out of this acquisition?
