During the ongoing Microsoft and FTC hearings, court documents dated 2019 have revealed that Square Enix was an acquisition consideration for Microsoft. Bloomberg reports that under the name “Project Phoenix,” the company aimed to bring Square Enix under the fold to bolster Xbox’s presence in Asian markets which would further the appeal and adoption of users into Game Pass. It goes without saying that this acquisition would also open up Square Enix’s library of titles, from Final Fantasy to Kingdom Hearts, to its players. https://twitter.com/business/status/1674101139111804953 One more reason for this plan was to provide mobile segment growth for Xbox, adding that it would assist in improving “future mobile-exclusive Game Pass offerings” due to Square Enix’s robust mobile-native portfolio. It’s no secret that Phil Spencer has been working hard to improve relations in the Asian region, particularly with Japanese studios and audiences, and this plan would have certainly helped with that.…

Square Enix unexpectedly announced back in May that it would be selling off multiple Western studios and IPs to the Embracer Group. The sale included studios such as Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, with a treasure trove of IPs such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and much more. The ongoing discussion at the time was that Sony was looking to acquire Square Enix, but not as a whole. By trimming down certain parts of the company, Sony was looking to simply get its Tokyo HQ. It seems that one high-ranking official thought so as well. Eidos Montreal founder Stephane D’Astous recently revealed in an interview on GamesIndustry.biz that he had thought of that approach, along with hearing rumors of such moves. “If I read between the lines, Square Enix Japan was not as committed as we hoped initially. And there are rumors, obviously, that with all these activities of mergers…

Balan Wonderworld, despite its interesting premise, was a game that was heavily criticized when it was released last year. In fact, it was widely regarded as one of the worst games of the year, which was not a good look for Square Enix and director Yuji Naka. The game was reviewed harshly, even by us (read our review), and it was puzzling to see why it was released in such a state. As it turns out, thanks to new information from Yuji Naka himself, there were a lot of complications behind the scenes, prompting the director to even file a lawsuit against Square Enix. Watch – Balan Wonderworld Opening Movie https://youtu.be/CpUfLwRNDXA In a series of tweets by Naka (roughly translated by Twitter translator), he goes on to say that he was removed from his position as director 6 months before the launch of the game. He filed a case, which…

During the 20th Anniversary Event of the franchise, Square Enix has announced Kingdom Hearts IV and is confirmed to be in development. The announcement was made through a nearly 8-minute trailer that shows some of the upcoming updates and titles that we can expect such as the finale of Kingdom Hearts Union Cross and a new game called Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link that will have a closed beta test sometime in 2022. At around the 4:05 mark of the video, you can see a somewhat realistic looking setting, with Sora awakening in a world called “Quadratum” after being asleep for 7 days. The visuals are a huge step up from the typical Kingdom Hearts games, which offered a more cartoony look. Kingdom Hearts IV Trailer You can check out the full trailer below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2DSEkYFRh8 Apart from this new entry being confirmed to be in development, there are no details such as…

As spotted by Gematsu and Renka_Schedule on Twitter (via Nibel), a filing made by Square Enix is causing a stir in the community at the moment, cautiously excited at what this could mean for the franchise. It should be noted that Square Enix has NOT announced anything about this, so we’ll be keeping an eye out for more developments on this front. More often than not, trademarks or copyrights don’t really mean anything but interestingly, Tactics Ogre: Reborn was one of the many titles leaked in that massive GeForce Now list late last year, prompting many to believe that there could be something happening since quite a number of games from that list have now been proven to…
