Sony reveals first look at the next-gen PS5 VR controller

A few weeks ago, Sony had teased us with an announcement that a new PSVR will be making its way to the PS5. No images and very little details to go by. That all changes today, as a post on the PlayStation Blog gives us a first look at the next-gen VR controller.

Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning and Management talks a bit about the next-gen VR controller, saying that it aims to give players “a much deeper sense of presence and stronger feeling of immersion in VR experiences” that will leverage on the new technology that was introduced by the DualSense controller.

Immediately noticeable is the brand new design, which follows an “orb” shape as described by Nishino, allowing the players a high degree of freedom while providing good balance and comfort during gaming sessions.

The new controller will have features similar to the DualSense, boasting of Adaptive trigger technology as well as haptic feedback. The controller will also feature what’s called Finger Touch Detection, which allows the peripheral to detect your fingers without the need to press certain areas, making gestures feel more natural.

The controller will also sport a new button layout, with the left controller having one analog stick, triangle, square, a “grip” button (L1), trigger button (L2) and Create button. The right controller will have the other analog stick, cross, circle, a “grip” button (R1), trigger button (R2) and Options button. Part of the whole package is that the new controller will be tracked by the headset via a tracking ring on the controller.

Nishino continued to say that the controller prototypes will be making their way soon to various VR development communities to kickstart development and ideation.

No other details have been given, but we can expect Sony to show more soon, leading to a full unit unveil including the headset.

Sony has been steadily promoting the PSVR, even highlighting the new games coming onto the current platform. We can only wonder how much better the experience can be with the next-gen set.
