Sony and Naughty Dog have apparently been very busy, as it seems that the 2013 smash hit The Last of Us is being remade just years after a remaster.

According to a report by Jason Schreier on Bloomberg, which reveals not only this but also of internal discord between studios, The Last of Us remake, codenamed “T1X”, was initiated by a small group of developers after passing on a remake of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. This group, named Visual Arts Service Group, was led by Michael Mumbauer, whose primary goal was to expand upon Sony’s successful franchises.

The report further points that Sony never gave the group any funding or support after the project was deemed too expensive by Herman Hulst, and the group was moved to assist with The Last of Us Part II. After the completion of TLOU Part II, Naughty Dog effectively took over The Last of Us remake project which is apparently still ongoing.

The leadership group, including Mumbauer, have left the company, according to people familiar with the situation.

Also included in the report is a revelation that Sony Bend, of Days Gone fame, apparently pitched a second Days Gone game but was waived off due to its lengthy development cycle and mixed reception. Instead, Sony reportedly shifted them over to new projects – one is a new Uncharted game and the other is a multiplayer game (assumed to be The Last of Us II Factions), both under supervision of Naughty Dog. Sony Bend’s leaders requested to be taken off the Uncharted project due to fear of being absorbed, and are now making a new game, but not without some leaving because of the arrangement.

Despite a strong showing by Sony in the early months of the PS5 release, it seems that not all is well within the studios, and if the reports prove to be all true, then fans of the PlayStation may be in for a rocky generation.
