CD Projekt Red unsure if next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 will launch in 2021

CD Projekt Red is still targeting to launch the next-gen versions of both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 later this year, but it seems that pushing it back is not out of the question.

Speaking at the company’s H1 2021 results call (as transcribed by VGC), SVP of business development Michał Nowakowski says that “The target is to release the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year. At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.”

The Witcher 3 next-gen version, being worked on by Saber Interactive, could also be pushed back, and promises cannot be made at this moment.

“But for the time being, we definitely are aiming with both titles for late 2021 and I don’t want to be more specific at this moment in time.”

This is certainly a call back to the rocky launch that Cyberpunk 2077 experienced last year, which turned the once Game of the Year candidate into a lesson on “how not to launch a game”. CD Projekt Red is approaching the schedules with more caution and wants to ensure a quality release.

Michał Nowakowski is speaking in realistic terms, especially in a time where schedules are always in flux. The pandemic has hit every aspect of the industry pretty bad and at this point in time, we shouldn’t expect anything to be set in stone.

If you’ve been waiting for the next-gen versions to come before playing both Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, you might have to wait a bit longer. Hopefully not!
