The news and revelations coming out from the ongoing Microsoft and Activision Blizzard merger have gotten more and more interesting as the weeks and months go by, and this latest bit of news sees Sony concerned about the possibility of Microsoft releasing a buggy build of Call of Duty on the PlayStation.

As seen through the new documents submitted by Sony to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), statements found indicate that Microsoft might “release a PlayStation version of Call of Duty where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates.” Doing such may get gamers to decide to switch to Xbox to play on a better platform.

Microsoft might release a PlayStation version of Call of Duty where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates. Even if such degradations could be swiftly detected, any remedy would likely come too late, by which time the gaming community would have lost confidence in PlayStation as a go-to venue to play Call of Duty. Indeed, as Modern Warfare II attests, Call of Duty is most often purchased in just the first few weeks of release. If it became known that the game’s performance on PlayStation was worse than on Xbox, Call of Duty gamers could decide to switch to Xbox, for fear of playing their favourite game at a second-class or less competitive venue. 

In documents submitted by Microsoft, they have maintained the 10-year deal offer to Sony and have also said that, should the deal push through, they will be allowing Call of Duty to be included in Sony’s subscription service (PS Plus).

While the claims of Sony are indeed a possibility, doing so could irrevocably ruin Microsoft’s reputation should it be proven true, so it could be argued that Microsoft has a lot to lose by resorting to this tactic.

Whatever the result of this acquisition, it seems that it is far from over, and we may see more of these revelations in the coming weeks and months.
