4Divinity Announces The Defiant, A WWII FPS Set in Asia

In a nutshell

  • The Defiant is a WWII FPS set in China’s War of Resistance against Japan.
  • Developed in Unreal Engine 5, it blends cinematic storytelling with guerrilla-style combat.
  • Launching soon on PC via Steam and consoles, with a trailer now available.

Publisher 4Divinity and developer Hoothanes have officially announced The Defiant, a story-driven first-person shooter set in the Asian theatre of World War II.

Unlike the usual depictions of Normandy or Western Europe, this game focuses on China’s War of Resistance against Japan, a brutal and often overlooked conflict that claimed millions of lives.

According to 4Divinity Group CEO Sebastian Toke, The Defiant embodies the label’s mission to deliver bold, story-driven games that shed light on untold chapters of history. The newly released trailer showcases the game’s cinematic tone, diverse environments, and authentic cultural identity.

Cinematic Storytelling Meets Guerrilla Warfare

Built in Unreal Engine 5, The Defiant promises a restrained yet authentic approach to storytelling. Players will traverse occupied villages, frozen forests, fortified supply routes, and enemy-controlled cities, with missions ranging from stealth infiltration and espionage to large-scale assaults and vehicular combat.

Weapons are treated as historical artefacts, with faithfully recreated firearms such as the Hanyang Rifle, Mauser Military Pistol, and MP18 submachine gun, each carrying the weight of its wartime legacy.

The Defiant – Release Platforms and Availability

The Defiant is set to launch on PC via Steam and consoles. Players can already wishlist the game on Steam to stay updated on its release.
