The next-generation of consoles are coming in the next few weeks (weeks, not months!!!) and needless to say, the hype and thirst for these consoles is real. Pre-order have sold out within minutes for both, but for Sony and the PlayStation 5 in particular, it seems that the demand for it is quite unreal.

In an interview with Reuters, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says that they have “pre-sold as many PS5 consoles in the first 12 hours in the United States as in the first 12 weeks for its predecessor PlayStation 4 device”, which is pretty crazy considering the massive success of the PS4.

Daniel Ahmad puts the figure into perspective though, saying that the numbers are specific to the US only. In comparison, according to Ahmad, it took around 10 weeks for the PS4 to breach 1 million global pre-orders, indicating that the PS5 may have already broken that record.

What this all boils down to is that if you thought you could happily stroll down to your local retailer and easily get a PlayStation 5, you’re in for quite the disappointment. Jim Ryan already gave a heads up that although not everyone may not get one during launch day, Sony is working hard to produce and ship out more consoles as quickly as possible to meet the insane demand.

“It may well be that not everybody who wants to buy a PS5 on launch day will be able to find one,”

Locally, there is no word yet on the price nor availability for the PlayStation 5. In the region, only Singapore and Hong Kong have confirmed prices and stocks, leaving out their fellow Southeast Asian neighbors guessing. With just around 3 weeks left, the ball is in Sony’s court and we’re just waiting for the tip off.
