Mortal Kombat 2021 – Game vs Movie Comparisons

The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie has fans excited for its upcoming theatrical release and for good reason. If the trailers are anything to go by, then the movie is certainly a bloody good time, fatalities and all.

Mortal Kombat is a fighting game series as iconic as Street Fighter, and was also very controversial for its time. It’s the game that caused the creation of a rating system for video games in the West, and it made words like Fatality and Toasty iconic phrases. It was also adapted into a film back in 1995 that became a classic favorite for its faithfulness to original game and its cast has become iconic to Mortal Kombat fans.

Fast forward to 2021, and in anticipation for the film, we had a blast looking at all the nitty gritty that the 2021 reboot got right. In fact, it may very well seem like the crew really had a blast incorporating a lot of the elements from the game into the big screen that will surely make fans wide-eyed in anticipation of these moments.

Here are just some of the details from the game that made its way to the movie!

Signature Mortal Kombat Details

  • Finish Him / Her and Flawless Victory

You can’t have Mortal Kombat without someone yelling “Finish Him/Her!” and it would be a crime not to hear it again in the Mortal Kombat 2021 reboot.

Whenever you hear the words Flawless Victory it’s very likely you heard it first in a Mortal Kombat arcade machine somewhere or in your own home console in one of the many ports of the original Mortal Kombat.

  • Get over here!

The famous catchphrase of the iconic ninja Scorpion is one that’s definitely easy to spot for long time Mortal Kombat fans. So it’s a no-brainer that Scorpion MUST say it in the 2021 reboot.

  • Shao Kahn

You have to give props to the film crew for this very menacing statue of Mortal Kombat villain Shao Kahn as it remains very faithful with his design, from the skull helmet, to the hammer bearing the Mortal Kombat symbol.

  • Sub-Zero and Scorpion Costume Details

Scorpion and Sub-Zero started as palette swaps of each other in their very first appearance, distinguished only by their yellow and blue color schemes, and movesets. But make no mistake. As Sub-Zero strongly declared in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, he is Lin Kuei and Scorpion is a ninja. But over the years, their costumes went through many changes until eventually you can clearly tell them apart.

The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot has taken note as Scorpion and Sub-Zero too bear very distinct costumes from each other, and both look simply badass.

  • Jax’s Metal Arms

Ever since losing his arms and being equipped with some new robotic ones in Mortal Kombat 3, the metallic implants have become a trademark of sorts for Major Jackson “Jax” Briggs. And Jax will be sporting them pretty early in the 2021 movie. They even already show in the trailers how Jax loses his arms so it’s clearly no spoilers he will be making use of his replacement limbs early in the movie.

  • Goro

What’s Mortal Kombat without Prince Goro. This hulking sub-boss is just as iconic as Shang Tsung as far as Mortal Kombat goes. There’s clearly Four reasons why Goro is a memorable design, so that’s another kudos for the film crew as he looks very faithful to his videogame counterpart. As for his actual role, we’ll have to wait for the movie.

  • Scorpion’s Katana

Long time fans will know that while certain characters wield weapons in the Mortal Kombat series from the get-go like Kitana and Erron Black, Mortal Kombat 4 was the turning point where weapons were officially included as a game mechanic. Since then, it wouldn’t be unusual to see characters who previously fought mainly with their bare hands now wielding weapons, like Scorpion who now sports a katana alongside his spear in the movie, very much like his game counterpart in recent iterations of the series.

  • Mileena’s Sai

An example of a character who used weapons from the start. Mileena will be appearing in the 2021 reboot and she will be wielding her signature twin sais, along with what seems to be a penchant for biting her opponents apparently, if this shot from the trailers is any indication. We’ll have to wait and see.

  • Sub-Zero’s Kori Blade

While Sub-Zero did not first use a sword when weapons were introduced in Mortal Kombat 4, the Kori Blade was introduced in later games and became a sort of trademark weapon for the ice-wielding Lin Kuei. It is reproduced pretty faithfully in the 2021 reboot, and is just as deadly in Sub-Zero’s hands.

Mortal Kombat Character Moves

  • Kung Lao’s Hat

You can’t have Kung Lao and not incude his iconic razor sharp hat. This deadly headware is especially a big shot of nostalgia, especially for those who were trying to pull off his Fatality back in Mortal Kombat 2 where you had to aim for an opponent’s head to successfully peform it. Point is Kung Lao will be throwing some hats when you see him in the 2021 movie.

  • Kano’s Eye Beam
mortal kombat game and movie comparison 13

While it was very unusual that Kano was working WITH Sonya Blade based on the trailers instead of being a hated nemesis of hers, Kano is definitely recognizable with the bright red eye. And that eye isn’t for show as Kano will be using his eye beam from the game.

  • Kabal’s Dash

Props have got to be given for Kabal’s design in the movie. It’s a little different but you can still recognize it’s Kabal from the Mortal Kombat games.

And it looks like his moveset is retained like his dashing move. You gotta love the attention to detail as the purple trail following Kabal is very similar to the effect in Mortal Kombat 11.

  • Sub-Zero’s Ice-based Moves

Sub-Zero underwent a major change when he was revealed as not the same Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat 3. Aside from not sporting a mask, he learned to use his ice techniques in a variety of different ways. For one thing, expect Sub-Zero to summon a rain of ice from the sky to shower on his enemies, much like his Ice Shower move in Mortal Kombat 3.

You also gotta love this detail of Sub-Zero escaping from an attack using an Ice Clone. Unfortunately, unlike the game where his opponent will be frozen upon touching the clone, it looks like it functions differently in the 2021 movie. But hey the fact that the move is there shows the people behind the film did their research.

  • Liu Kang’s Dragon Attack
mortal kombat game and movie comparison 18

From a Fatality in Mortal Kombat 2 to becoming an Animality in Mortal Kombat 3, Liu Kang seems to be often associated with a dragon. And you can expect Liu Kang will be making use of a dragon again in the 2021 movie. While it’s a little different that Liu Kang summons it instead of becoming a dragon himself, it may be safe say this will be a finisher just like the games.

  • Jax’s Head Clap
mortal kombat game and movie comparison 19

When Jax started to pull his hands back during this clip long time fans will likely recognize it’s the same motion as one of his Fatalities in Mortal Kombat 2. It’s also very likely to be the same seeing what he’s about to clap.

  • Kano’s Heart Rip
mortal kombat game and movie comparison 20

Kano just simply knows his way into your heart, literally. No need for any imagination here as the trademark Fatalities will be in the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie and it looks like Kano can’t wait to demonstrate his signature chest reach Fatality from the first Mortal Kombat game.

All of this just from the trailers alone! Surely the movie will hold much more that fans of the game should really look forward to seeing all the blood and gore as Mortal Kombat hits cinemas soon.
