PlayStation and Xbox show marked increases in both hardware and software sales

Despite the prevailing conditions brought about by the pandemic, it seems that both PlayStation and Xbox have been doing great, showing impressive numbers brought about by the introduction of both next-gen systems in the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series late last year.

According to Sony’s latest posted financial results and from Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, the PlayStation 5 has sold 7.8 million units worldwide as of March 31, 2021, and is ahead of the PlayStation 4, which shipped 7.6 million in the same time frame. Overall, the PS4 has now sold a total of 115.9 million units in its lifetime. These are impressive numbers, considering the situation the world is faced with right now, showing that people have been really investing in gaming.

In terms of software, 338.9 million games (both physical and digital) were sold for the PS4 and PS5 in the last fiscal year. 65% of this number, or 220 million, were digital copies and 17% or 58.4 million were first-party games like Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Additionally, there are now 47.6 million PS Plus subscribers, which is 6.1 million more over the past fiscal year. Sony is expecting this year to be a stronger year for them, due to the massive demand of the PS5 that easily overpowers the supply.

Xbox is also seeing staggering numbers, as shown by their latest financial results. Gaming revenue for Microsoft has been big, which is up 50% compared to last year, owing to the strong showing of their next-gen offerings in the Xbox Series X and S. In fact, in terms of hardware, they are seeing a 232% increase for these new consoles, which is very favorable for the company coming from the Xbox One era.

One of their biggest drivers as well continues to by their content and services, which is up 34% from last year, owing to the fact that Game Pass has been a great value add for gamers worldwide by adding huge titles like Outriders and MLB The Show 21 day and date on the service.

Both companies are enjoying record numbers, and it stands to reason that it will only get better when more customers get a hold of their next-gen consoles.
