Project L, the Upcoming League of Legends Fighting Game, Will be Free-to-play
Riot Games has announced that its upcoming fighting game based on League of Legends, Project L, will be free-to-play when it launches.
The announcement was made on the latest dev diary of the game, which was hosted by Tom Cannon, senior director and executive producer of the game. Cannon reiterates that the team wants everyone to play the game, and is taking steps to make sure that the barrier to entry is as low as possible.
“One of our goals is to remove as many barriers as possible from you enjoying Project L. We want you to be able to play no matter where you live, what your skill level is, or how much money you have to spend on a game,” says Cannon. “To that, I’m happy to confirm that Project L will be free-to-play. If you’ve played a Riot game before, this probably won’t come as a surprise.”
Cannon also shares that the team working on Project L is made up of fighting game veterans and have assured that they are building the game to be respectful of our time and wallets.
Additionally, a new character was revealed in a blog post, and it is none other than Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess. She’s described as a “Big Body” that will deal powerful hits while having slower movement and a hard-to-master kit.
“Illaoi is a strong and muscular woman who attacks with a giant totem, so it makes sense she would hit with her own physical strength, as opposed to hiding behind the power of her god or magical abilities,” says game designer Caroline Montano
She will also wield the power of Nagakabouros, a tentacled sea monster that serves as Illaoi’s God and is there to assist the character.
Project L has no specified release date as of writing but more overall updates are promised towards the end of the year.
