Next Need For Speed game development delayed to 2022

Just a couple of days into March and we’re already getting news of another delay.

Development for the new title in the Need For Speed franchise will reportedly be delayed for a year, as Criterion Games will assist DICE on the next Battlefield 6, who have been feeling the pressure and fatigue brought about by the pandemic.

The recent acquisition of Codemasters, best known for their F1 and Dirt series, will be bringing in a racing game to fill the void of the absence of a Need For Speed title. For clarity, the Need for Speed franchise is neither in trouble nor is Criterion being pulled from the game, as reported by Polygon speaking to Laura Miele, EA’s chief studios officer.

Taking over from Ghost Games on the Need For Speed franchise, Criterion Games has been a support team assisting DICE with past titles such as Star Wars Battlefront 2’s Starfighter Assault and Battlefield V’s Firestorm mode. “They’ve worked on [Star Wars] Battlefront, they’ve worked on Battlefields, and they have a really tight, close collaborative partnership with DICE. I’m really confident that this is going to be a pretty positive win for them,” Miele says.

Are you excited for the new Battlefield 6 or were you expecting a new Need For Speed instead?
