Stranger Than Heaven – A Story Spanning Five Cities and Five Eras
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN follows Makoto Daito, a man born to an American father and a Japanese mother who struggles to find where he truly belongs. Set between 1915 and 1965, the story sees Daito travel across five cities in search of a place to call home while navigating a turbulent era filled with ambition, conflict, and personal discovery.
The journey begins in 1915, when Daito secretly boards a ship departing San Francisco for Japan, fleeing severe discrimination in America and hoping to reconnect with his mother’s homeland. Along the way, encounters with fellow stowaway Yu Shinjo and merchant Orpheus set the course for a life-changing adventure.
Stranger than Heave – Meet Makoto Daito and His Closest Allies
At the center of the story is Makoto Daito, portrayed by Yu Shirota, whose search for belonging drives the narrative.
Joining him is Yu Shinjo, portrayed by Dean Fujioka, a half-Japanese, half-British man seeking a fresh start in Japan. The two meet aboard the voyage and eventually decide to survive together despite their vastly different personalities.
Another major figure is Orpheus, portrayed by Snoop Dogg, a globe-trotting merchant who discovers Daito aboard his ship and introduces him to the realities of life in Japan while recognizing his musical talent.
The People Who Cross Paths With Daito
Throughout his journey in Stranger Than Heaven, Daito encounters a colorful cast of characters whose ambitions and circumstances intertwine with his own.
Among them are:
- Tae Matsumoto, portrayed by Moeka Hoshi, a café waitress in Kokura.
- Suzy Day, portrayed by Tori Kelly, an aspiring singer who begins her rise through show business after meeting Daito.
- Kiyoshi Otsuru, portrayed by Tokuma Nishioka, a stylish elder with a commanding presence.
- Takashi, portrayed by Satoshi Fujihara of OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM, Daito’s sworn brother and a gifted pianist.
- The Veiled Stranger, portrayed by Cordell Broadus, a mysterious figure stationed in postwar Japan.
- Keiko Shirai, portrayed by Ado, known as the diva of wartime Osaka.
Familiar Faces and Surprising Appearances
There are also several notable additions to the cast of Stranger Than Heaven, including Genzo Iwaki, portrayed by the late legendary actor Bunta Sugawara and voiced by Takashi Ukaji. The character was recreated using archival footage and photographs with permission from Sugawara’s family and support from Toei Company.
Another standout reveal is Amaru, portrayed by Tupac. The portrayal was developed with permission and ongoing supervision from his estate, Amaru Entertainment, and that the character was created using archival materials without the use of AI.

The character lineup is further rounded out by Takeo Godai, Suekichi, Tetsuya Hama, Tadashi Hataoka, and Kimura, each contributing to Daito’s decades-spanning story.
