AI Upscaling Is Coming to PS5, Starting With Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei

In a nutshell
- Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-powered upscaling technology designed specifically for the base PS5.
- Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first games to support QSSR through updates available today.
- QSSR brings improved image detail and stability to the base console, leveraging technology developed through Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration.
Sony has announced that AI-powered image upscaling is officially coming to the base PlayStation 5 through a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). The feature aims to bring some of the visual benefits previously exclusive to PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) to the standard console.
What Is QSSR for PS5?
QSSR is a new performance-focused AI upscaling solution born from Project Amethyst, Sony’s graphics and AI collaboration with AMD. Unlike PSSR, which remains exclusive to the Pro, QSSR has been designed to run efficiently on standard console while still delivering noticeable improvements in image quality.
Sony says the technology is built around two key innovations:
- A streamlined neural network architecture
- A hand-tuned implementation optimized specifically for PS5 hardware
The result is an AI-assisted upscaling solution that enhances image detail and improves temporal stability beyond what traditional upscaling techniques can achieve.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei Lead the Way
Sony also announced that Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei are the first games to support QSSR. Both titles are receiving updates today that add the technology as an additional graphics option.
Sony confirmed that QSSR will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, allowing more titles to adopt the technology in the future.
While no additional games have been announced yet, the rollout marks a significant evolution for the PS5 platform, bringing AI-driven image enhancement to a wider audience and narrowing the visual gap between PS5 and PS5 Pro experiences.
