DualShock 4 controllers won’t work with PlayStation 5 games

In a post by the PlayStation Blog, Sony clarifies which peripherals will carry over to the PS5 from the PS4 and more importantly, how the DualShock 4 will be supported by the PS5.

Check out the simple list down below:

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.

Sony has put out a disclaimer that “not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals / accessories may work on PS5” and have encouraged users to reach out to the manufacturers to confirm compatibility.

DualShock 4 owners will be glad to know that their beloved PS4 controllers will be compatible with the PlayStation 5 but not for PS5 Games. This is because the new games “should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform”.

The wording here is tricky. Based on the above list, the DualShock 4 “will work with supported PS4 games.” Will the PS4 controller only work on PS4 supported (aka backward compatible) games? Will it still work on PS5 games but just not the haptic feedback and similar features or won’t it work with PS5 games at all? Based on how it is worded, we’re guessing it is the latter.

Lastly, the PS4 PlayStation Camera will be compatible with the PS5 for playing supported PS VR games but the catch is that it will require a camera adaptor which will be given for free to PS VR users. As to how it will be distributed, Sony will reveal details at a later date.
