Bravely Default II is out today for the Nintendo Switch and if you’re looking for a solid JRPG that follows the footsteps of the first 2 installments before it, you’ll be glad to know that the game has been receiving very positive reviews from various media outfits.

According to Metacritic, the game is sitting at a score of 80 across 45 critic reviews, which is a promising sign for Switch owners. It’s looking very much like Square has done it again.

GamesRadar goes all the way and gives it a perfect score, saying “Bravely Default 2 is one of the best games to point to when people ask what makes JRPGs fun.”

Game Informer gives it an 8, saying the game “succeeds at delivering what it’s best at: offering a taste of the past with the emphasis on creative class combinations, hordes of foes, and big boss battles. Bravely Default II deftly harnesses some of the ancient enchantment of classic grind-and-go console RPGs – but don’t expect anything beyond that.”

IGN gives it an 8 as well, calling Bravely Default II “a long, familiar JRPG journey with excellent customizable combat and beautiful backdrops that pass the time as you work through its extended stretches of grinding.”

Nintendo Life scores it an 8, saying “Square Enix has demonstrated once again that it understands exactly what ingredients are necessary to make a great RPG. The interesting, risk-based combat is supported by a diverse class system and a well-told story, which all combine to make for an experience that can be tough to put down. That said, one can’t help but feel a consistent sense of ‘been there, done that’ with Bravely Default II; Square certainly could’ve pushed the envelope just a little more with this entry. That aside, you really can’t go wrong with Bravely Default II. This is a well-crafted and expertly-made RPG that is easily worth your time and money; we’d highly recommend that fans and newcomers alike look into picking this up.”

Gamespot, on the other hand, scores it a 6, saying “I’m left with mixed feelings about Bravely Default II. There’s a lot to like and a core that’s still fun and engaging. But the removal of some key quality-of-life features gives this experience a lot more friction than the prior games. I’ve loved the Bravely Default series for letting me feel like I’m 15 again–with all the time in the world to grind out a full set of level-99 characters–while still respecting my time by recognizing I don’t actually want to do that. Bravely Default II asked me to put in the tedious work and lost some of the series’ identity in the process.”
