EA’s FIFA 22 next-gen upgrade not available with the $60 Standard Edition
In an FAQ of EA about FIFA22, it was revealed that the Standard Edition of FIFA 22 on the PS4 or Xbox One won’t have the ability to upgrade to its next-gen version for free. Instead, only the highest edition, the Ultimate Edition which costs $99.99, will have the upgrade. Essentially, you’ll need the Ultimate Edition to have both the current and next-gen versions of the game, which is quite the pricey proposition.
“Dual Entitlement”, as it’s called, basically means the next-gen upgrade. The FAQ states that “Dual Entitlement is only available with the purchase of the FIFA 22 Ultimate Edition. The Standard Edition of FIFA 22 does not include Dual Entitlement. That means if you purchase FIFA 22 Standard Edition on PS4 and upgrade to PS5 later, you would need to purchase the PS5 version of the game to play.”
Further down the FAQ page, it sounds like the Ultimate Edition is only available digitally. The FAQ states that “you will need to purchase the FIFA 22 Ultimate Edition which is only available digitally to take advantage of the Dual Entitlement offer.”
FIFA 21 had free next-gen upgrades, so this is quite the drastic shift in strategy, as the next-gen upgrade is technically going to cost $40. As a consolation, the Ultimate Edition of the game will come with quite a number of in-game items, 4 days early access, and 4600 FIFA points.
The issue of free upgrades have heated as of late, with titles like Ghost Of Tsushima essentially charging $10 for its Director’s Cut version.
