Overwatch 2 Scrapping PVE Hero Missions, 2023 Roadmap Unveiled
Blizzard Entertainment has unveiled the Overwatch 2 high-level roadmap for the remainder of 2023, which includes the single largest drop of new gameplay released at one time since launch, all coming to the game in Season 6.
Players can look forward to PvE Story Missions in Season 6, complete with in-game cinematics, that will push the narrative arc of Overwatch forward for the first time since the original game release. Also coming in Season 6 are a new Support hero, a new core game mode in Flashpoint (with 2 new maps), and more.
Additionally, the Overwatch 2 team has made the tough decision to scrap Hero Missions from the game.
When Overwatch 2 was originally announced in 2019, it was with two main components: Story Missions, and Hero Missions. Simply put, these hero missions would have each of the characters on the roster will have a PVE mode and progression system that was ambitious and promising. Now, through a statement, Executive Producer Jared Neuss and Game Director Aaron Keller have cut the feature to not pull away resources from the live game which has been performing rather well.
Neuss clarified that while “Hero Mode + Talents” are indeed being cut, there is still PVE content coming in this year in the form of “Big story missions, new cinematics, co-op events and single player Hero Mastery missions.”
