Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters Producer Soya Mikumo on Balancing Nostalgia, Innovation, and Global Football Fandom

Japan’s soccer prodigy is making a return in Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, launching in August on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The first title was well received for its fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay that faithfully reflected the anime, and now this latest installment promises even more action.

Ahead of its release, we sat down with Soya Mikumo, the main producer of Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, as he talked about the upcoming game, its gameplay evolution, and coinciding with the World Cup.

The Vision Behind Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters

Mikumo opened by emphasizing the team’s mission to immerse players in the world of Captain Tsubasa as the starting point.

“We thought our first priority was that players must be immersed completely in this world of Captain Tsubasa… If you are a fan of Captain Tsubasa, you may easily understand it because Tsubasa himself would explain something while they are playing the game. I would like the players to share this kind of experience.”

In terms of portraying the teams based on real life scenarios, this was not something the team looked into.

“We didn’t particularly include or consider the current situation of the Football world, we just considered the Captain Tsubasa series.”

This philosophy guided the introduction of new systems such as super moves, miracle shots, and the chain system, all designed to replicate the dramatic flair of the source material while maintaining balanced gameplay.

Gameplay Evolution and Balance

Mikumo explained that feedback from the first game, Rise of New Champions, shaped the new mechanics found here, saying it was important to hear from players to deliver something players would appreciate.

“After the release of the previous game, we checked the response from players… there were comments about the difficulty of controlling… what we tried to eliminate is to simultaneously press two buttons because it was complicated, so we settled on just one button.”

“What we tried to do with Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters was we tried to incorporate some things found in recent action games where you see an opponent’s action and you react to it by pressing a button.”

The new chain system ensures unpredictability in matches, allowing momentum to swing dramatically. While goalkeeper stamina gauges remain, players can choose the direction to guess where the shot is aimed, which will determine whether the decrease in the goalkeeper’s HP is large or small, keeping matches exciting until the final whistle.

“For Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, I wanted to include user control when they shoot at the goal. The selection may end up in a perfect save, bringing a certain excitement.”

“If a play will continue, the chain system number will increase. If the chain level is high, the shot power will also be elevated. Even if the goalkeeper’s strength is high, you have a possibility of scoring so the excitement continues till the last minute.”

Additionally, balancing the teams remained quite a challenge, with some teams having higher stats in certain departments than others. That said, each team has its own unique trait that makes it shine.

“Each team has its own unique characteristic, and because of this, their playstyle is different, so we adjusted the balance based on that. So even if you are the Indonesian team, you can beat the Brazilian team.”

“In terms of individual characters, for example, Tsubasa is very strong, so we have to honor that. When it comes to the team, we just adjust the balance there.”

Storytelling and Canon Integration

The narrative of Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters draws heavily on the World Youth arc, which takes place 4 years after the events of the first game, while introducing unseen teams crafted with input from the original manga creator, Yoichi Takahashi.

“Because development was done by the same staff as the previous series, they have vast knowledge of Captain Tsubasa… For Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, we had assistance from Mr. Takahashi to create the new teams.”

“In terms of the design, we included the team who did the character design in the anime, so those who enjoy the anime can also seamlessly enjoy the game.”

Social media elements were also woven into the storyline of Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters to modernize the context, reflecting how young players now learn and evolve by watching global stars online.

Global Football and Cultural Resonance with the World Cup

Mikumo acknowledged the overlap between football-loving nations and anime fandom, citing strong reactions from Brazil, Mexico, and France.

“When we announced the game, there was a huge reaction through social media… the countries in this series had a better response. I feel there is a certain correlation.”

The inclusion of Southeast Asian teams like Indonesia and Thailand in Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters was deliberate, recognizing the passionate fanbases across Asia and the desire to represent them with care.

“In terms of the names, we didn’t refer to a particular person. Instead, we had close communication with out local and overseas staff and then we searched for names that are quite familiar to the local people.”

“If the nations are happy for this inclusion, we are also very happy.”

The timing of World Fighters’ release was no accident, as it was really supposed to coincide with and take advantage of the timing of the currently ongoing World Cup.

“Yes, you are right. We developed this game to coincide with the World Cup.”

Widespread Appeal Even to Non-soccer Fans

Mikumo closed by stressing accessibility: even players unfamiliar with soccer or the anime can enjoy the thrill of representing a national team and discovering the Captain Tsubasa universe through gameplay.

“Even if the person is not familiar with the Captain Tsubasa anime or manga, if the person plays football, we had them in our minds as those who would enjoy the game. By playing Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, you will learn who Tsubasa is and the antagonists, immerse yourself in the world, and eventually you will enjoy.”

“Even if they don’t know about Captain Tsubasa itself, it’s exciting to be part of a national team and play in the World Cup. Eventually they get interested and may watch the anime or read the manga, which would be great for us.”
