Grand Theft Auto VI Deep Dive

According to a deep dive preview from Dazed, one of the most striking improvements in Grand Theft Auto VI is the introduction of fitness and lifestyle mechanics that directly affect Jason and Lucia’s appearance. Eating, working out, or neglecting sleep will visibly change their bodies.

GTAVI marks the return, and expansion, of these interactive systems that alter the protagonists’ bodies. Food affects Jason and Lucia’s weight, while exercising visibly builds and tones their muscles. And, if you end up spending a long time away from your bed, on the run from police or on a multi-day bender, their features are going to pay the price for that as well.

This or That?

Another major leap forward in Grand Theft Auto VI is the seamless character switching between Jason and Lucia. Unlike the segmented transitions of Grand Theft Auto V, players can fluidly swap perspectives mid‑mission or even during casual exploration. This creates cinematic gameplay moments, such as driving as Jason while instantly switching to Lucia firing from the passenger seat, or scrolling her in‑game phone while Jason handles the wheel.

Players step into the shoes of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos – an ex-military drug runner and a fighter fresh out of prison, respectively – and can choose to either play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently. This marks the first time that a GTA game has featured a playable couple in the lead role, which makes for some unique scenarios: on the way to a job, for example, players can cruise along the highway as Jason, or swap to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll on the in-game phone.

The integration of social media into Grand Theft Auto VI’s world also reflects modern digital culture. Characters can browse feeds in real time, and viral posts influence the narrative, adding satire and immersion that mirrors today’s online landscape. This feature makes Vice City feel more connected and reactive to the player’s actions.

Rockstar has also invested heavily in NPC creation, doubling its development team since Red Dead Redemption 2. The result is the most varied and culturally authentic population the series has ever seen. NPCs react naturally to player behavior, fashion trends shift with the city’s vanity, and Miami’s music culture pulses through the streets. Over 50 real street artists contributed murals, further grounding the game in a living, breathing environment.

To pull off the technical and cultural feats required to build a world of the scale, depth and interactivity of GTAVI, the Rockstar team has more than doubled in size since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. It has offices around the world, with one branch in LA dedicated almost solely to the world of in-game pedestrians (NPCs).

Altogether, Grand Theft Auto VI represents a step forward in immersion, consequence, and cultural authenticity as Rockstar Games attempts to redefine what players can expect from an open‑world crime saga.
