Sony Rumored to Launch PS5 With Detachable Disc Drive in 2023
Sony is allegedly launching a new PS5 model that will feature a detachable disc drive sometime around September 2023.
Writing on the Insider Gaming Website, Tom Henderson goes on to detail the new PS5 iteration and says that the new model will have an additional USB-C port at the back to connect an external UHD Blu-ray disc drive.
The information comes from sources familiar with Sony’s plans who wished to remain anonymous, adding that the new PS5 model will have almost identical hardware to the existing consoles already on the market. The new hardware may be sold on its own or in a bundle with the detachable drive, and customers that want to purchase the drive separately may do so, eliminating the need to purchase a new console.
The sources have also pointed out that the detachable drive will “not ruin the aesthetics of the console” and will attach to it without looking out of place. Without saying directly, it can be safely assumed that the new PS5 model will also be slimmer and lighter.
The older models will reportedly be phased out slowly.
Tom Henderson has proven to be a reliable source of information, as he has reported on countless other items that have come to fruition, such as the recently revealed DualSense Edge and the INZONE line of gaming products.
That said, nothing is official at this moment, and we’ll have to wait for word from Sony if this is indeed true. Plans could still change in the span of a year, and hopefully the PS5 will be easier to get by then.
