At Summer Game Fest, we had the opportunity to play Saber Interactive’s Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, a survival horror video game adaptation of the classic horror series directed by master of terror, Clive Barker!

In our 30-minute session of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, we were able to play an early version of the build, and we were able to explore the combat aspect of the title as well as explore the hellscape level, which the series is most known for.

Fans of the franchise have plenty to look forward to with Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival. With Clive Barker directly involved in the creative process and Doug Bradley reprising his role as the iconic Hell Priest, “Pinhead,” the game promises an authentic return to the series’ roots.

Players step into the role of Aidan, whose girlfriend Zoe is murdered after he unlocks the Genesis Configuration of the Puzzle Box. Driven by grief, he ventures into its secrets in hopes of resurrecting her. Our preview began in a grim S&M club, where cultists relentlessly hunted us down as we searched for a way to open the Puzzle Box and enter the Hellscape. Armed with a machete, handgun, shotgun, and the Puzzle Box itself, combat quickly escalated into a desperate fight for survival.

The game plays much like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, offering a first‑person survival horror experience with limited ammo, crafting materials, and healing items. Players must scavenge supplies, manage resources, and solve straightforward puzzles while navigating locked areas.

What sets Revival apart is the Puzzle Box mechanic, which functions like a supernatural arsenal reminiscent of BioShock. It allows players to manipulate the environment, telekinetically hurling debris, igniting enemies with torches, and unleashing devastating powers.

You Have Chosen the Genesis Configuration

Once the Hellscape is unlocked, the game truly shines. This nightmarish realm evokes Silent Hill puzzle sequences, forcing players to confront Aidan’s past and his fractured relationship with Zoe.

The Genesis Configuration transforms the entire Hellscape into a living puzzle, where instruments of torture and grotesque imagery block progress. Failure means restarting, amplifying the tension. Along the way, glimpses of Cenobites like Butterball reinforce the oppressive atmosphere, even as Pinhead himself remains unseen in this build.

The deeper players descend, the more complex the puzzles become, revealing unsettling truths about Aidan and Zoe. Whether the journey is worth the torment or escape from the Cenobites is even possible remains the haunting question.

For now, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is shaping up to be a brutal, atmospheric experience that fans will want to keep an eye on ahead of its release.
