The OMG Review
Our review format is not your usual fare and we’ve broken it down into 3 very simple ratings!

“Buy it!” means that the game deserves a place in your collection. Be it day 1 or a slightly delayed purchase, it’s hard to go wrong with this title. In numbers, this is around an 8/10 and above.

“Wait for it…” means that while the game is good, it probably isn’t worth it at its day 1 price point. We suggest you wait for a sale before jumping in. In numbers, this is around a 5 – 7/10.

“Ignore it!” means that the game is not something we’d recommend playing, whether it be now or in the near future. Maybe ever. Let’s not even go to the numbers for this one.

Few franchises are as iconic and as easily tied to a console as Gears of War. First launched during Microsoft’s heyday with the Xbox 360, who could forget oversized soldiers Marcus and Dom taking on the Locust with their iconic chainsaw guns, gory skirmishes, and fantastic cover system? While its later entries were quite divisive among the fanbase, Gears of War: E-Day promises a return to form in more ways than one.

And it absolutely delivers.

Set during the first catastrophic hours of Emergence Day, Gears of War: E-Day rewinds the clock to the moment humanity first encountered the Locust Horde. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, developer The Coalition focused on refining the classic formula while modernizing it through enhanced movement, spectacular visuals, expanded co-op options, and a renewed emphasis on the brotherhood that has always been the emotional core of the series. It does occasionally stumble under the weight of its prequel narrative, but the overall experience is highly satisfying and one the franchise can hold in high regard.

Welcome Back

The biggest challenge facing Gears of War: E-Day is one that all prequels share, and it’s that players already know what happens next. Mainline Gears entries have already told stories about Marcus and Dom, Humanity, and the Locust scourge. It has all been written, as they say, so crafting a good enough story with an emotional core is key, and for the most part, The Coalition has delivered something that focuses more on the journey.

Seeing Marcus and Dom before they became the legendary figures fans remember gives their relationship more emotional context, while their camaraderie remains the heart of the experience; newcomers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes add fresh perspectives to the outbreak of the Locust War. Each character gets enough time to shine and connect with players, though it’s easy to see how both newcomers may be divisive. Personally, they’re solid additions to the campaign, but the chemistry between Marcus and Dom is still the highlight. It was also great seeing the history of many things, especially if you’ve played the later games, such as how the Chainsaw Lancer was devised.

The Gears of War: E-Day campaign also excels at portraying the chaos of Emergence Day itself, set 14 years before the first game. Buildings collapse, monsters erupt from underground, civilians struggle to survive, and entire city blocks descend into carnage. The scale of destruction creates a constant sense of urgency that drives the campaign forward even when the narrative itself becomes predictable, especially when you repeat certain locations multiple times throughout the game simply because the setting is stuck in Kalona.

That said, the game looks absolutely phenomenal. In my time with Gears of War: E-Day, few current-generation titles match the environmental detail and spectacle on display here, thanks to its lighting, animation, and creature design. In fact, it depicts the Locusts as terrifying horrors that really give you chills. The sheer scale of the Locust invasion often creates breathtaking moments, especially when enormous monsters emerge from beneath the battlefield, or cityscapes collapse in spectacular fashion, capturing the horror and confusion of humanity’s darkest day.

The Best Combat in the Series

If it looks good, it sure as hell plays well, too. Gears of War: E-Day retains the core formula that’s been its strong foundation – slide into cover, peek over barricades, blind-fire at approaching enemies, and finish them off with a chainsaw – but The Coalition have upgraded these with sensible additions like jumping, sliding, and mantling, all coming together to allow players to move more freely and responsively, which makes the game such a joy to play and control because it is a lot snappier, rewarding players with aggression but not penalizing those who choose to play cautiously behind cover.

The weapon design and accompanying audio work are among the best the series has ever delivered. Few shooters deliver the same sense of momentum and intensity, and Gears of War: E-Day is full of exhilarating moments that make you let out an audible sigh of relief because you just ran down an attack you probably had no business surviving. The Lancers are as iconic as ever, the Gnasher Shotgun remains the weapon of choice for close-range blasting, and the Longshot Sniper can still clear rooms on its own.

Combat funnels players through a mostly linear/corridor-like structure where players will move between areas, trigger enemy spawns, clear them, and rinse and repeat. By all accounts, it works, and while it may get repetitive at some point, blasting enemies is so fun and exciting that you would tend to look past the repetition because of the feelings these encounters can bring out.

To break the monotony, Gears of War: E-Day introduces areas where players can roam a semi-open environment, with side activities that offer optional objectives, additional collectibles, environmental storytelling, and chances to explore devastated neighborhoods. As you can imagine, these sequences would really break the pacing because of the game’s intense moment-to-moment gameplay, but these side activities offer a nice change of pace with well-done world-building moments. Again, these are optional, so you can skip them and stick to the critical path.

Better with a Buddy

The Coalition definitely understands camaraderie between soldiers is a strong bond that keeps the relationships held together, and Gears of War: E-Day continues that legacy with one of the strongest multiplayer offerings in the series to date. The campaign supports four-player online co-op alongside two-player split-screen play, and if you happen to have a chance to do so, it really is a great time because the game presents you with multiple moments that really lend themselves well to co-op play, such as a last-second revive that means the difference between life and restarting at the checkpoint.

If a buddy isn’t available, Gears of War: E-Day remains highly enjoyable even when played solo because the AI is surprisingly capable on its own and can, at times, even advance the objective without you having to move a muscle.

Gears of War: E-Day also introduces a personal favorite mode, Horde Siege, where players join a 12-player PvE session split into three squads of four that complete missions on a shared map, encouraging cooperation without requiring it unless a huge enemy threatens the run. Players can choose from four classes, such as the Assault or the Breacher, each with its own loadout and specialty, while navigating countless enemy hordes across game modes that run from 15 minutes to nearly an hour.

This game mode is highly replayable, with expansive maps and an objective-driven design that modernizes the classic formula and delivers more heroic moments that can make you give imaginary high-fives to your squadmates. On top of that, a full suite of multiplayer modes will also be available, which already feels like the cherry on top of a content-rich package XBOX fans have long been waiting for.

  • Superb Audiovisual Presentation with Stunning Set Pieces
  • Excellent Co-op Offerings

What we didn't like:

  • Some Free-roam Sections may Hurt Pacing
  • Some Predictable Story Beats

Gears of War: E-Day is arguably one of the best Gears games in the decorated franchise, portraying Emergence Day as both terrifying and spectacular, capturing humanity’s darkest moment through unforgettable set pieces, emotional stakes, and a renewed focus on Marcus and Dom’s brotherhood. While the narrative occasionally treads predictable ground, the game’s exceptional presentation, stunning visuals, and atmospheric depiction make for a compelling campaign from start to finish.

More importantly, Gears of War: E-Day succeeds in one of its most important aspects in combat. The refined movement system, satisfying arsenal, phenomenal audio design, and relentlessly engaging combat combine to create what may be the series’ finest gameplay. Paired with excellent co-op support, surprisingly competent AI companions, and the highly replayable Horde Siege mode, the package feels content-rich and confidently modern, making for a triumphant prequel that leaves us wanting to see how the series moves forward, especially with XBOX treating this as a signature exclusive.
