What’s New in Granblue Fantasy ReLink: Endless Ragnarok? A Lot!

Two years after the release of Granblue Fantasy: Relink, the game’s immense popularity prompted the developers to create a full expansion, titled Endless Ragnarok, driven by their desire to deliver meaningful content rather than smaller, incremental updates.

As they explained, “The core game design for Relink was never envisioned to be a live service game, so for us to just switch Endless Ragnarok into a live service update was not possible. However, just like the player feedback that led to the birth of Endless Ragnarok, if we see a really positive reaction from our fan base, we would think about more updates or other ways we could support it.”

“It might not be an expansion that’s the same volume as Endless Ragnarok, but it really just depends on the type of reaction we get from the player base and the market at large to determine post-launch support.”

From the perspective of the game’s design, it was never meant to be a live service title, so we were not able to create a smaller style update to really deliver content that we knew our players were expecting. That’s why we decided to go with the more major expansion.”

In fact, the scope of content in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is so vast that the directors mentioned they had included everything they envisioned.

“Everything we wanted to put in, we put in. We put everything in. Actually, when we put everything in, we thought we could do more, and that’s when we made the Summons.”

“The reason we added so many summons is that the number one type of feedback we got from players is to put certain characters in. If we had time-stopping superpowers, we would have done that. However, we’re only human, so we can’t put in all 400 characters, so we made the summons system as sort of a way to achieve a similar effect.”

Length and Looking Ahead

With such a massive amount of content in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, both newcomers and veterans can expect to pour a lot of hours once again.

“You can expect 1.5 times ReLink’s content in Endless Ragnarok, which should result in double the play time for most players, so you can imagine that first-time players are going to have plenty of stuff to explore. They can expect 20-30 hours of additional content, and that’s if they rush through everything.”

“We didn’t want to focus on just increasing the amount of content, but also brushing up the experience as a whole, and to do that, we decided we needed to make some revamped UI, make some quality of life adjustments, as well as some balance adjustments across the board.”

When asked about the possibility of another expansion on the scale of Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, the developers were cautious but open:

“It’s a little bit too early to say if we can produce another expansion on the scale of Endless Ragnarok. However, the reaction we got to Relink is what birthed Endless Ragnarok. So if we have an equally strong reaction, it’s definitely a possibility. It really depends on what players want—it could be another large-scale expansion, or even a full sequel.”

Catching Up

Both Hidaka-san and Furukawa-san acknowledged the challenge of onboarding new players into a game with such depth. While there’s no direct skip to endgame content, several systems are being introduced in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok to ease progression.

“We don’t have a direct skip feature, so new players won’t be able to just skip directly to Endgame Ragnarok content, but we’ve rebalanced the base Relink content. We’ve added new character progression systems, and also the Conflux, which provides materials to develop weapons and characters. If you really want to get to Endless Ragnarok quickly, you can play the Conflux multiple times—that’s the fastest way to catch up.”

Another addition in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is the Backup Characters system, allowing players to borrow developed characters from others:

“You can register a character you’ve developed into the system. Then, other players can borrow that character and add it to their party. So you can actually borrow a super-strong veteran character to help you clear content and progress with your own.”

New Characters and Boss Philosophy

Six new playable characters join the roster in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, chosen through a mix of fan demand, story relevance, and gameplay variety.

“For Maglielle and Gallanza, we received a lot of feedback and comments from fans stating that they wanted to see these two characters in the game. For Beatrix and Eustace, they’re part of the Society, so with Zeta and Vaseraga already appearing, we wanted to complete that group. And for Fediel and Fraux, they’re unique characters not in the universe, so adding them was a fun surprise.”

Summons, Master Traits, and Conflux Missions

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok introduces six new playable characters, each with distinct mechanics, alongside a roster of new and reworked bosses.

“With a new story comes new bosses… In addition to these new bosses, there are also some revamped bosses coming in the new difficulty quest tier, and despite being familiar, they have been totally reworked with new mechanics,” explained director Tetsuya Fukuhara.

Among the highlights are The World and Beelzebub, infamous names within the Granblue Fantasy universe, with more equally notorious foes to be revealed later.

“The World and Beelzebub are all new bosses, however, and they’re kind of infamous within the world of Granblue Fantasy. In addition to these two, we have more bosses planned, which are just as infamous as these two, which we will reveal at a later date.”

One of the most intriguing additions in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is the Conflux Dungeons, designed as single‑player side content. “The Conflux Dungeons are side content that you can drift off and play solo by yourself. It’s a type of game design that doesn’t really match with a co‑op mode, which is why we’ve elected to turn it into a single‑player mode,” the developers shared.

Each run lasts 15–20 minutes and rewards players with progression materials to upgrade characters and weapons, creating a loop among core quests, dungeon runs, and co‑op battles.

The idea is to play quests for the core of your content, move to the conflux dungeons to get the materials to progress your characters, and then go back to the co-op mode.”

One of the biggest (literally) additions in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is summons, which are especially helpful in high‑level raids where enemies boast millions of HP.

Summons allow players to call and control a variety of allies on the spot. You can select up to four different summons and put them in your summon loadouts, allowing you to choose which one you need for the moment at hand. We predict most players will summons to counter enemy moves,” the team explained.

Summons are earned as quest rewards once the expansion content unlocks, and they serve as powerful, game-changing abilities.

“So one way to think about summons is like a bomb in a shooting game. If you use a bomb, it completely changes the state of battle in a really quick, temporary fashion. That’s similar to summons in Endless Ragnarok. Once you use them, they have a powerful effect, which changes things drastically.”

“All four players will share the same summon gauge. It sounds like it would be competitive, but actually, if I have a cheap summon that costs one, and my ally has a three-cost summon, when I use mine, it lowers their cost to two. So there’s strategy in how you coordinate.”

Their ambition even extended to making every NPC and monster playable as summons in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, which is a wild idea that became a reality mid‑development.

“Eventually, the discussion wrapped around to include every single NPC, every single monster, anything we had an asset for, and make these playable. So it was a really crazy idea, actually. We had this idea in the middle of the development cycle, so when we pitched it, our team members were going to be like, We’ll never meet this schedule. At the same time, team members thought it also would be a fun idea to execute.”

Another major feature in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is the Master Traits system, designed to refresh character progression and re‑engage lapsed players.

We created this Master Traits system with two goals in mind: we wanted to provide new experiences for players who played a lot of a character already, and freshen that experience for them. We also wanted to address the fact that as players got more familiar with the game, they identified optimal builds, so many skills were left unused,” the developers said.

Each character now has three distinct playstyles that evolve as players unlock traits tied to their master level.

“If you’re using the same character, depending on the playstyle that you select for the character, it’ll change their primary strategy, as well as the skills that they should focus on for that playstyle. Each character will receive three different playstyles, as you increase the character’s master level, which will unlock master traits, and the more you gather, the more they will define and enhance that playstyle. It’ll gradually evolve.”

The Pain of Rebalancing

When asked playfully whether the QA team would hate them for the amount of rebalancing work that came their way in Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, they replied that their QA team was already suffering even during the release of the base game.

“Actually, even in the original release, our QA team was already suffering enough, so they were making adjustments right up until the end of the game. So rebalancing has been a labor of love for sure, especially with our QA team working around the clock to ensure that the game is fun to play and has a proper balance, especially regarding summons.”

In fact, there were more than one occasion when the QA team would report summons one-shotting bosses while testing Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, but the team was up to the task and is accustomed to working with all these moving parts.
