OlliOlli World: VOID Riders Review – Out of This World

OlliOlli World: VOID Riders Review
Speed Run
Speed run is our review format to take a look at smaller and shorter games out there that may deserve your time and money.

Again, we’ve broken it down into 3 very simple ratings!

“Buy it!” means that the game deserves a place in your collection. Be it day 1 or a slightly delayed purchase, it’s hard to go wrong with this title. In numbers, this is around an 8/10 and above.

“Wait for it…” means that while the game is good, it probably isn’t worth it at its day 1 price point. We suggest you wait for a sale before jumping in. In numbers, this is around a 5 – 7/10.

“Ignore it!” means that the game is not something we’d recommend playing, whether it be now or in the near future. Maybe ever. Let’s not even go to the numbers for this one.

OlliOlli World: VOID Riders is the first of two expansions to one of our favorite indies of this year. Despite releasing in the same month as Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring, this sweet-skating title has captured the hearts of many with its slick gameplay and clean art style that is a joy to play over and over again.

VOID Riders adds to the already quirky story of achieving Gnarvana, as you come across visitors from the Planet V.O.I.D. who have come to dish out skateboarding challenges to your planet.

You won’t be able to access the DLC immediately if you’re playing OlliOlli World from scratch, as you’ll need to have completed a rather meaty part of the game, specifically Route 666 in the Burntrock Zone.

With additional levels and cosmetic rewards, it’s time to dust off our trusty skateboard and hit the tracks once again. It’s time to show these interplanetary visitors who the real Skate God is!

Into the Void

As an expansion, VOID Riders is a short and sweet experience that pays in dividends. After unlocking a quick introduction and a new technique: The Tractor Beam Jump, you’re treated to new challenges across 18 new levels and even new characters in Sair’Rah, Khehvyn, and Pftangxi, who are as charming and humorous as your squad – Suze, Chiffon, and Mike.

The Tractor Beam jump, in particular, is definitely a nifty new trick to add to your repertoire, which I really enjoyed combining with wall jumps and rail grinds. It’s pretty cool because you can gain so much verticality when the prompt is introduced, allowing you to access hard-to-reach areas and even some new Gnarly Routes that open up many gameplay twists and even higher scores to contend with.

The new challenges from VOID Riders really are quite something else and dare I say it, out of this world. They combine everything you’ve learned from the main game, and when I thought they couldn’t add any more platforming challenges, the expansion introduces more moving parts and disappearing platforms that required countless restarts to get right.

The skill ceiling is definitely higher this time around and will test your patience and dexterity once again, so it goes without saying that you’ll need to have learned and understood a healthy portion of the base game before you can take on the challenges in the VOID Riders expansion.

The Truth is Out There

One of our favorite new things from VOID Riders are the new cosmetic items up for grabs, with my favorite being the alien headgear that can be acquired by completing some of the ultimate challenges.

Completing the challenges in the expansion involves a combination of a number of things, with the easiest one (relatively speaking) being completing a race between yourself and a Lagoon monster which you’ll have to complete without checkpoints.

Similar to the base game, VOID Riders expects the player to accumulate skills and showcase what they’ve learned throughout their journey to becoming a Skate God. The satisfaction in completing levels and challenges is second to none, making the experience of it all worth it.

VOID Riders is a great expansion that adds another 2-4 hours of new content to your overall experience. Getting everything is obviously another story, and if you’re competitive enough to challenge friends and other skaters around the world, prepare to sink more hours.

What We Liked:

  • Tractor beam jumps are a nifty new trick to add to your repertoire.
  • New levels have superb design and creativity
  • Additional range of cosmetics

What We Didn’t Like:

  • New challenges are even tougher, requiring some patience and skill

Verdict: Buy It!

One-More-Game-Buy-1

OlliOlli World: VOID Riders adds a ton of value to the base game with a new technique, new cosmetics, and new backbreaking challenges to keep you playing. It makes an amazing game even better, with the caveat of getting good if you want to enjoy the elite rewards.

The expansion, and the base game, will require a moderate level of skill and patience if you want to access the full breadth of content in the game, so prepare to wipe out and repeat some challenges over and over before achieving success, just like real-world skateboarding. Without the aliens.

VOID Riders is a great expansion that adds more of what made OlliOlli World an already fantastic experience, and that’s definitely not a bad thing in our book.
