Cyberpunk 2077 Steam player count has drastically dipped since launch
After a blistering launch, racking up over 8 million preorders and 1 million concurrent players on Steam, it seems Cyberpunk 2077 has lost a bit of… steam. On its first month alone, according to GitHyp, the latest from CD Projekt Red has already lost 79% of its player base, a decline that is 3x faster than that of their previous release in The Witcher 3.
It’s not all bad news though, as Cyberpunk 2077 is still enjoying a concurrent player base of around 225k players, which is still anywhere from 2-5x more than The Witcher 3 ever had in its lifetime. Pretty impressive numbers, considering its rocky launch.
While this may seem like a drastic drop, and it is, there are a number of things to consider. First of all, this is a single-player game, not in any way something that should be treated like a live-service title, and highly possible that these players have already beaten the game. Another consideration is that it is indeed shorter than The Witcher 3, with a stardard playthrough needing just around 40 hours to complete, more if you take on the various sidequests in the game.
It could also be that due to the severe mess on the console versions, some players are opting to wait it out to make their first dive into Night City a good one. The PC version is undeniably the best version out there, but it still has quite a number of bugs and glitches that need fixing, and players could be waiting for more patches to come.
Although Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 13 million copies in just 10 days, it has been neck-deep in various issues, especially with the base console versions being nearly unplayable for most. In fact, Sony pulled out the game from the PS Store, offering refunds for digital copies despite its strict refund policy.
Cyberpunk 2077 is now available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC, and Stadia.
