The Last of Us Part II is the most awarded game in history

After dominating 2020 with multiple award wins such as the Best Game of 2020 from Metacritic’s user polls as well as Game of the Year from The Game Awards, the latest outing from Naughty Dog has beaten a long-standing record held by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, making it the most awarded game in history.

As spotted by users over at the r/PS5 subreddit, The Last of Us Part II now has 261 GOTY awards across various outfits around the world, which has been compiled by Gameawards.net. That’s just 1 award more than The Witcher 3, which held the record since 2015 with a whopping 260 awards.

The site has been compiling past winners as well, and it is quite interesting to see the numbers for the different winners over the past years. Take a look at some of them below:

  • 2020 – The Last of Us Part II – 261
  • 2019 – Death Stranding – 102
  • 2018 – God of War – 208
  • 2017 – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 223
  • 2016 – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – 173
  • 2015 – The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt – 260

Other notable winners are The Last of Us back in 2013 with 254 and Skyrim back in 2011 with 227.

As a note, these titles are the overall winners per year, meaning that they received the most GOTY awards for that year and isn’t necessarily the GOTY for shows like The Game Awards or Golden Joystick.
