Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Could Be The Biggest Video Game Movie Ever, Posts Massive Opening Weekend Numbers

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is swimming in a lot of rings right now as it currently sits atop the video game movie list while breaking records.

As reported by Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has performed admirably at the box office, raking in $71 Million in the US alone, making its international total rise to $141 Million. This figure puts it at the top of the pack, making it the biggest opening for a video game movie.

Coincidentally, the previous “record holder” was the first Sonic movie, which collected $58 Million in the US during a holiday weekend back in 2020.

Paramount Theatrical Distribution Boss Chris Aronson had this to say about the achievement by Sonic the Hedgehog 2:

Sonic 2‘s record opening is a victory for Paramount and for the industry at large. The filmmakers did an amazing job of crafting a film that is both in service of Sonic’s legions of fans as well as the general and family audience. Growing a franchise is no small feat and having an opening +22% over the first film is a remarkable achievement. Kudos to the filmmakers and to the marketing and distributions teams at Paramount for doing a fantastic job in bringing the film into the global marketplace!”
