Sony Handheld for PS5 Games Reportedly in the Works
In a nutshell
- Current Status: The PS Portal is Sony’s current handheld, primarily for remote play and cloud streaming.
- New Development: Sony is in the early stages of developing a new portable console to play PS5 games on the go.
- Market Competition: The new handheld aims to compete with Nintendo’s Switch and Microsoft’s upcoming handheld, but it may be years away from launch.
The PS Portal might be the current handheld in Sony’s portfolio right now but is meant as a primarily remote play and cloud streaming device rather than something more capable. That’s looking to change if a recent report holds true.
PS5 Handheld Details
According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony is in the “early stages” of developing a new portable console that would play PS5 games on the go. The new handheld is said to build on the current PS Portal, which was originally intended to be a standalone device like the Steam Deck.
Furthermore, the report states that this handheld is slated to compete with Nintendo, which has a firm grip on the handheld market with its wildly successful Nintendo Switch. Microsoft is also working on a handheld as well.
This PS5 handheld is likely “years away from launch,” and Sony may still choose to decide against bringing it to market.
