Diablo Immortal’s Senior Narrative Designer Talks About What to Expect in Update 3.3
Diablo Immortal continues to grow as the ultimate mobile action RPG, constantly introducing new content that enhances gameplay and storytelling. After the Shattered Sanctuary update, which saw players face off against Diablo, a new update is coming that will usher in new features and story beats that will lay the foundation for a strong year.
Diablo Immortal’s Senior Narrative Designer, Ryan Quinn, explains how the 2025 “Epoch of Madness” roadmap sets up the rest of the year, focusing on telling a continuing story with heavy implications in the coming months.

Diablo Immortal 3.3 Update Interview
“Diablo Immortal, in our mind, is like the sequel to Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. That means it’s really about what happened to the world of Sanctuary after the Worldstone was destroyed by Tyrael at the end of Diablo II,” shares Quinn.
“So our vision overall is something that goes from the aftermath of Diablo II to beginning to set the stage for what we see in Diablo III in the future.”
One of the more recent updates to Diablo Immortal was Shattered Sanctuary, which sets up a majestic confrontation with Diablo himself. The update brought about big emotional moments and a lot of brutal fights in World’s Crown, and even more story implications after the defeat of the Lord of Terror.
The latest 3.3 “Writhing Wilds” update continues the tradition by introducing a new zone, The Sharval Wilds, where Albrecht, now free from the grasp of demonic control, brings his Shardborn family to. But how much of his humanity and memories are left?

“It’s a place that we’ve talked about a lot in the past, but we haven’t actually gone there. So we want to build up the diverse suites of cultures that live in this place, not just the important kind of power factions like the witches and the druids, but also the homesteaders who live in the hamlets near the forest and the urban dwellers who live in the capital city of Enstig.”
Alongside this new zone also come new threats, and players will be exposed to the Fey, a new monster family that will challenge players once again.
“They’re kind of twisted nature spirits. Think of spirits of rot and under soil and decomposition in nature. These are beings that typically hide far, far away in the deep woods and don’t come out very often. They’re only very rarely glimpsed by travelers.“
“We’ve got a number of new Fey monsters – melee range, brute style enemies, and they’ve got a pretty interesting gameplay dynamic. They’re fairly mobile, especially the pale flock, which are the flying, enemies that have a tendency to surround you and swarm in from all sides.”

Players should look forward to it because Diablo Immortal’s 3.3 update was heavily shaped by player feedback.
“People have asked us for more story and more consistent quest content after we did a few off-the-beaten-path quest content at the beginning of 2024. And now we’re delivering four big main quest sections in quarter one, quarter two, quarter three, and quarter four. That’s very much in response to player feedback. We’ve got features coming like the new battleground map that explicitly responds to community requests.”
Additionally, Diablo Immortal will introduce its first crafting system when the 3.3 update launches, and the team is very excited to see how players react to it.
“You’ll find ore nodes. You’ll mine them for resources. You’ll bring those back to a blacksmith. The rarer ores will allow you to exert a little bit more customization over the type of gear you’re crafting at the blacksmith. We’re all fans of general MMO and RPG crafting systems, and we hope that it brings a strong sense of control over your loadout and a little bit more authority in shaping your arsenal.”

Another big question is the appearance of a new class as part of the updates this year, and while Quinn can’t really mention too much just yet, he has dropped hints of what it could be.
“Is this class a big fantasy that a lot of players would wanna take part in? Are we excited about it? It’s also about finding the gaps in the current game. Do we have enough cool Melee abilities and enough cool ranged abilities? Are we supporting every play style that we can conceivably think of?“
“So it comes down to, you know, what is the right class for this moment? What is the right class for the story of the epoch of madness for the themes and the tones that we’re dredging up and the gameplay content we’re releasing that this year. What I can say on that front is the new class is very, very tightly tied to all of those thematic elements. It is, in my view, the perfect class for the third year of Diablo Immortal.”

Diablo Immortal is preparing for another big year of story revelations, new gameplay updates, and more exciting content that players will want to watch.
