Grand Theft Auto VI Map Confirmed to Be Twice the Size of GTA 5, Features Dynamic World and Six Major Regions

In a nutshell

  • Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI’s map is roughly twice as large as GTA 5’s, making it the biggest world the studio has ever created.
  • Leonida’s overhauled weather system introduces localized weather, tropical storms, hurricanes, and dynamic cloud formations.
  • The game’s world will feature six major regions, over 170 animal species, and a wide range of recreational activities.

Rockstar Games has shared new details about Grand Theft Auto VI, confirming that its sprawling new map will be approximately twice the size of GTA 5’s world while introducing an advanced weather system capable of generating hurricanes, tropical storms, and highly localized weather patterns.

The latest information comes from a new preview featured in Game Informer, which takes a closer look at Leonida, Grand Theft Auto VI’s fictional take on Florida, and provides additional insight into the massive scale and technological advancements players can expect when the game launches.

Grand Theft Auto VI – Leonida Will Be Rockstar’s Biggest Open World Yet

According to Rockstar Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Aaron Garbut, Leonida is the largest map the studio has ever created “by some degree,” with the world reportedly measuring about twice the size of GTA 5’s Los Santos and Blaine County.

However, Rockstar emphasizes that sheer size is only part of the equation. The development team has focused heavily on environmental density and detail, crafting everything from rooftops and alleyways to building interiors to create a more believable and immersive world.

Garbut noted that the team obsessed over every aspect of the environment to ensure that buildings feel more realistic both inside and out, helping Leonida feel like a cohesive, living world rather than a collection of disconnected locations.

Dynamic Weather Brings Florida’s Wild Climate to Life

One of the biggest technological upgrades in Grand Theft Auto VI is its redesigned weather system.

Rockstar Vice President of Art for Lighting and Rendering Owen Shepherd revealed that the weather technology has been completely re-engineered to deliver more localized and persistent conditions across the map. This means players could experience clear skies in one part of Leonida while witnessing heavy rainfall, storm clouds, and lightning just a short distance away. The system is specifically designed to replicate Florida’s famously unpredictable weather patterns.

The new cloud technology will also allow for dynamic weather ranging from bright blue skies to towering cumulonimbus formations, complete with lightning strikes and severe storms. During intense weather events, players can reportedly expect to see rainwater pouring from rooftops and street fixtures while thunder illuminates nearby storm clouds.

Rockstar has not yet revealed how often hurricanes and tropical storms will occur or whether they will directly impact gameplay.

Six Distinct Regions Make Up Leonida

Rockstar also detailed the six main regions players will be able to explore in Grand Theft Auto VI:

  • Vice City – The vibrant urban heart of Leonida inspired by Miami.
  • Leonida Keys – A tropical island region based on the Florida Keys.
  • Grassrivers – A vast wetland inspired by the Florida Everglades.
  • Port Gellhorn – A declining tourist destination filled with rundown attractions.
  • Ambrosia – Leonida’s industrial hub dominated by factories and refineries.
  • Mount Kalaga National Park – A wildlife-rich region inspired by the Florida-Georgia border.
