In a nutshell
- A new report claims that Naughty Dog is developing a brand-new Uncharted game that will feature Nathan Drake in some capacity.
- The project is reportedly not a remake, but a new entry in the franchise and could be the studio’s next game after Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
- Shaun Escayg, director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, is said to be leading development.
After years of speculation surrounding the future of PlayStation’s beloved treasure-hunting franchise, a new report suggests that Naughty Dog may finally be preparing to bring Uncharted back.
According to a report from MP1st, the studio is reportedly working on a new Uncharted title that will feature series protagonist Nathan Drake in some capacity. While details remain scarce, sources claim the project is a completely new installment rather than a remake or remaster.
For now, it’s important to treat the information as a rumor until Sony or Naughty Dog makes an official announcement.
Nathan Drake Could Return for Another Adventure
The report states that Nathan Drake will appear in the game, though it remains unclear whether the iconic adventurer will return as the main playable character, take on a supporting role, or simply make a cameo appearance.
This is particularly interesting given how Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End seemingly brought Drake’s story to a satisfying conclusion, with the character retiring from his globe-trotting adventures and settling down with his family. Because of that ending, fans have long wondered whether a future installment would instead follow another character such as Chloe Frazer, Nadine Ross, or even Drake’s daughter Cassie.
Shaun Escayg Reportedly Leading Development
Another notable detail from the report is that Shaun Escayg is allegedly helming the new project. Escayg previously directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and served as creative director on Marvel’s Avengers.
Fueling speculation earlier this year, Escayg reportedly posted an image from Trinidad and Tobago on Instagram while conducting what he described as “research,” leading many fans to theorize that work on a new Uncharted game was already underway.
A Long Wait May Still Be Ahead
Naughty Dog is currently focused on its upcoming sci-fi adventure, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which is expected to be the studio’s next major release. According to the report, the new Uncharted project would come after that title.
The studio has also recently revealed that it is working on multiple projects related to The Last of Us, meaning its development pipeline is already packed.
