Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda returns with a brand-new animated masterpiece, Scarlet, now showing exclusively in SM Cinemas.

Known for acclaimed works such as The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Mirai, with the latter earning him a Best Animated Feature Film nomination at the 91st Academy Awards, Hosoda’s latest film blends time, the afterlife, and revenge into a story that offers hope in the face of darkness.

Scarlet – A Timeless Tale with a Modern Message

Hosoda draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, reimagining the timeless theme of revenge with a more positive outlook. At the heart of the film is Princess Scarlet, whose quest for vengeance becomes a journey of forgiveness and resilience.

“The question presented to Scarlet is how to deal with the energy, how to forgive. There are many parallels to our current geo-political landscape and I wanted that reflected in the screenplay,” Hosoda shares.

Exploring the Otherworld

Much of Scarlet is set in Hosoda’s haunting vision of the Otherworld, an afterlife where past and future intertwine.

“A place where life and death coexist, and both past and future are all woven together. If you are not strong enough you will disappear into nothingness,” Hosoda explains.

This mystical setting amplifies the film’s themes of redemption, resilience, and humanity’s collective desire to overcome the cost of war.
