Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Physical Games Will Cost More in the US

In a nutshell

  • Starting May 2026, US physical Switch 2 games will cost more than digital versions.
  • Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will be the first title with a $10 price difference.
  • Nintendo says the change reflects production and distribution costs, not gameplay differences.

Nintendo has confirmed that, beginning in May 2026, physical versions of Switch 2 games in the US will retail at higher prices than their digital counterparts.

The change starts with Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which will cost $70 in physical format versus $60 digitally. Nintendo clarifies that this takes effect on new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to the Switch 2.

More Expensive Physical Switch 2 Games – Why the Difference?

According to Nintendo, the pricing adjustment reflects the different costs of producing and distributing physical games compared to digital releases. The company emphasized that gameplay experiences remain identical across both formats, and the change is intended to give players more choice in how they purchase titles.

“Nintendo games offer the same experiences whether in packaged or digital format, and this change simply reflects the different costs associated with producing and distributing each format and offers players more choice in how they can buy and play Nintendo games.”

In a statement made to IGN, Nintendo further clarified the increase:

“The cost of physical games is not going up.

“This means that when Nintendo sells digital versions of Nintendo published games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 to consumers in the U.S., those prices will have an MSRP that is lower than their physical counterparts.

“Retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary.”
