Fallout 76 Infestations Expansion Now Available

In the last few seasons of Fallout 76, numerous innovations have been introduced to the game, including the introduction of Headhunts. There have been 67 major patches since launch, with Infestations being the 68th update.

We spoke to the developers of Fallout 76 to discuss the new mechanics and what to expect in this exciting new expansion!

Infestation!

Bethesda is rolling out the Infestations expansion for Fallout 76, bringing a new layer of dynamic, team‑oriented gameplay to Appalachia, West Virginia. Unlike large‑scale Public Events or server‑wide raids such as Headhunts, Infestations are quieter encounters that unfold organically across the overworld, affecting up to 40 major locations.

When players or squads stumble upon an Infestation, they’ll receive a prompt to join the activity. The objective is straightforward but challenging, tasking players with infiltrating the Infestation, overcoming waves of minions, and defeating the Infestation Leader. Successful runs reward participants with coveted 4‑star legendary gear, designed to bolster endgame raid builds.

Infestations cycle through different enemy archetypes, including Super Mutants, Robots, and Cultists, each offering unique challenges and varying levels of difficulty. While solo attempts are possible, the elusive nature of the Infestation Leader encourages teamwork and coordination to secure victory.

According to the developers, the expansion is designed to make Appalachia feel more alive. Players can now encounter rare spawns, unexpected battles, and valuable loot while exploring. The emphasis is on fostering group activities that reward cooperation and discovery.

With the patch going live on June 3, Bethesda will actively monitor Infestation events, fine‑tuning balance and engagement to ensure the system remains rewarding and sustainable for the community.

Future Goals

Fallout 76 Infestations 3

Bethesda has clarified that Public Events and Infestations will remain separate systems in Fallout 76, ensuring players don’t face overlapping chaos. While there are no plans to merge the two mechanics, the studio has hinted that if Infestations prove popular, the feature could eventually expand beyond Appalachia into future content such as Burning Sands.

For now, Infestations retain a straightforward design: locate the boss, defeat it, and survive the encounter. The primary incentive remains the pursuit of 4‑star legendary gear, with select items exclusive to this expansion, making them highly desirable for endgame builds.

Infestations will be capped per server to maintain balance. At launch, players can expect one Infestation every 15 to 30 minutes, appearing at randomized locations. Once activity stabilizes, the cadence will shift to one per hour, unannounced, to preserve the organic feel of discovery. Unlike Public Events, Infestations are not scheduled, reinforcing their role as spontaneous challenges.

Alongside the expansion, console players will receive a long‑awaited upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, Bethesda has confirmed there are no plans for Switch 2 support at this time.

Fallout 76 is now available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
