During a recent media preview of Silent Hill: Townfall, series producer Motoi Okamoto and Screen Burn Writer and Director Jon McKellan revealed how many endings players can expect in the game.
Silent Hill Townfall Multiple Endings Explained
Silent Hill: Townfall will have 5 endings, including the “expected” secret endings. McKellan further explained that the type of ending the players achieve in their playthroughs depends on their actions.
“Silent Hill: Townfall features 5 endings, including the types of secret endings that players have come to love and expect.”
“There are 3 main endings to the story and 2 secret endings.”
To elaborate further, McKellan mentioned that none of these endings will be achieved by a simple “A-B” choice, saying, “there’s no point in the game where you’re choosing left or right in order to get a new ending.”
Fans would remember that in Silent Hill f, the first ending is pre-determined, and will be the same for all players. That’s not the case in Silent Hill: Townfall, as the first ending will depend on the player, and they can get one out of the possible three right away.
“The 3 main endings can be achieved in your first play-through. You don’t need to play to get one ending and then unlock the others.”
McKellan grew up with the Silent Hill games and says that player behavior truly informed the experience, hence the same approach for Silent Hill: Townfall.
“The choices you make as a player throughout will determine the ending, and it should feel that the ending is very appropriate to the experience you had.”
“The goal is for the player to feel like it’s the natural conclusion to the story in terms of the way they played.”
The Factors for the Endings
While McKellan didn’t specify exactly what actions or instances would move the needle regarding the ending, he did have this to say.
“The ending you get will depend on how you play, how aggressive you are, how investigative you are. There are lots of different attributes that move the needle, so much so that when you get that ending, you feel like it’s the right one for you and not just a left turn at the end of a story and a sudden twist.”
“We hope that people feel that it’s the natural conclusion, but also that they want to learn more and want to think about it.”
How to Access the Secret Endings
Touching on this slightly, McKellan said that players will need to finish the game first before the secret endings can be unlocked, since they are part of New Game+.
“The other 2 endings that we would call the secret endings require you to play through New Game+. So that would be in your 2nd playthrough and onwards from there.”
Discussion on Themes
McKellan closed by saying that the themes of Silent Hill: Townfall will get players talking and exchanging dialogue after the credits roll.
“I think the themes of the game invite conversation around the finale and what the story means to them and maybe what they would do in the same situation.”
