Final Fantasy VI Remake Fans May Want to Temper Expectations as Square Enix Eyes New Games

In a nutshell

  • Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase says Square Enix is more likely to invest in new games rather than remakes moving forward.
  • While remakes remain possible, Kitase noted that projects like the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy are unique cases driven by creators with strong ties to the original game.
  • Kitase also expressed interest in creating new types of games in the future and suggested that adaptations of Final Fantasy into TV series or films remain a possibility.

As the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Revelation draws closer, longtime Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase has shared insights into what could be next for Square Enix once the remake trilogy concludes.

Speaking during an interview with IGN at Lucca Comics & Games Festival 2026, Kitase revealed that the company is more likely to focus on new titles rather than additional remakes moving forward.

Kitase, who serves as producer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy and brand manager for the Final Fantasy franchise, discussed Square Enix’s approach to balancing original projects and legacy properties, while also touching on potential adaptations, creative inspirations, and his future ambitions.

Square Enix Is Looking Toward New Experiences

When asked about the company’s strategy regarding new intellectual properties and remakes, Kitase indicated that new projects will likely take priority.

“I think that mainly we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games,” Kitase said.

However, he was quick to emphasize that remakes are not completely off the table. According to Kitase, the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy was a special circumstance because several creators involved in the original game were deeply passionate about revisiting the title and introducing it to a new generation of players.

As a result, similar opportunities could arise in the future when there is strong creative motivation behind revisiting a classic project.

Why Final Fantasy Continues to Resonate

Kitase also shared his thoughts on what makes the Final Fantasy series endure decades after its debut.

According to him, the franchise’s greatest strength lies in its characters and how they evolve throughout each adventure. He further noted that Final Fantasy’s distinct identity comes from a blend of European influences and Japanese creative sensibilities, resulting in a style that remains unique within the RPG genre.

More Final Fantasy Adaptations Could Happen

Outside of games, Kitase suggested that Square Enix remains open to exploring other forms of media.

Following the expanded storytelling seen throughout the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, Kitase said it would be exciting to see television series or other adaptations inspired by Final Fantasy stories in the future.

While no projects were announced, his comments indicate that the company has not ruled out returning to film or television should the right opportunity emerge.

Final Fantasy VI Remake Still a Popular Request

One particularly interesting topic involved the possibility of remaking another classic Final Fantasy title.

Although Kitase said he currently wants to focus on creating new games and does not plan to work on another remake anytime soon, he acknowledged that both fans and employees within Square Enix have frequently expressed interest in a Final Fantasy VI remake.

“Inside the company and also among the Final Fantasy fans, there’s been many people asking for a remake of Final Fantasy VI.”

For now, Kitase appears more interested in pursuing fresh ideas rather than revisiting older projects.

Kitase Wants to Explore New Types of Games

Looking to the future, Kitase revealed that he is intrigued by modern games that place greater emphasis on action and combat systems.

He noted that younger audiences are increasingly drawn to battle-focused experiences and suggested that he would like to explore that style while retaining the strong storytelling elements that define Final Fantasy.

With the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy nearing its conclusion, it sounds like both Kitase and Square Enix are already thinking about what comes next, and that future may involve entirely new worlds rather than revisiting familiar ones.
