Hogwarts Legacy is now available for players, or at least those who have pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition of the game. It has received praise from critics and fans alike, calling it a fantastic game that has captured the Wizarding World by storm.

It won’t be the Wizarding World without magic, and Hogwarts Legacy has a slew of spells that can be used for almost any situation in the game. From traversal to combat, players will want to be equipped with the best to get ready for anything the world throws at them.

Spells alone are powerful, but if you’re looking to power these up, you’ll need to spend points to unlock talents. Talents amplify your spells, giving them either more damage or additional utility.

That said, here’s a guide on the best spells and talents you can get in Hogwarts Legacy. Make sure to get these when you can so that you could make quick work of the challenges that lie ahead!

Hogwarts Legacy – Best Spells and Talents

Basic Cast, Revelio, and Ancient Magic

Basic Cast, Revelio, and Ancient Magic are some of the most basic spells in Hogwarts Legacy, but they shouldn’t be shrugged off since you’ll be using them for the whole game. Revelio shows what you need during exploration, while Basic Cast and Ancient Magic do wonders with combat.

How To Acquire: All of these spells are unlocked as you progress through the story.

How To Improve: Under the Core Talents screen, you can use talent points to improve Basic Cast and Ancient Magic Throw Expertise at level 5. Revelio mastery can be improved at level 16. Improved Revelio increases the range, Basic Cast Mastery improves cooldowns, and Ancient Throw Mastery catches disarmed weapons to be used against enemies.

Accio and Levioso

Accio (blue) and Levioso (yellow) are your basic utility and support spells in Hogwarts Legacy, differentiated by color. Just like the basic spells, these two will almost always be with you every step of the way. Exploration-wise, they allow you to access hard-to-reach areas, while in combat, they’re your go-to spells for destroying color-matched shields and incapacitating multiple enemies.

How To Acquire: All of these spells are unlocked as you progress through the story.

How To Improve: Under the Spells Talents screen, you can use talent points for Accio and Levioso Masteries at Level 5. Mastery with Accio allows you to pull multiple nearby enemies, while Levioso Mastery allows you to levitate multiple nearby enemies.

Protego and Stupefy

Protego and Stupefy are your first and last lines of defense in Hogwarts Legacy. While you can dodge most attacks, sometimes, blocking will be key to winning intense battles. Stupefy is a way to counter incoming enemy attacks by stunning them, allowing you to deal extra damage. These basic defensive tactics will be part of your loadout with every battle.

How To Acquire: All of these spells are unlocked as you progress through the story.

How To Improve: Under Core Talents, you can either use talent points for Protego Absorption at Level 5 or Stupefy Mastery at Level 16. Improved Stupefy increases stun time for enemies, while Protego Absorption charges your Ancient Magic meter faster for more knockout hits.

Disillusionment and Petrificus Totalus

Disillusionment is your basic spell for stealth and keeping out of harm’s way, while Petrificus Totalus is your take-down spell, which you will learn a bit later in Hogwarts Legacy. I’m not a fan of stealth, but when improved, I’d say it’s one of your best spells to use to gain access to lore and treasure in out-of-reach areas and a way to avoid annoying fights.

How To Acquire: All of these spells are unlocked as you progress through the story.

How To Improve: Under Stealth in the Talents screen, you can use talent points for Disillusionment at levels 5 and 16. This will improve your hiding ability and allow you to sprint while in stealth. At Level 22, Petrificus Totalus stuns nearby enemies, making takedowns much more satisfying.

Alohamora

Alohamora is one of the best spells in Hogwarts Legacy because of its ability to access hidden areas and more loot. Simply put, this is basically your lockpicking spell to open up those locked doors scattered throughout the world.

How To Acquire: Alohamora is unlocked as you progress through the story.

How To Improve: By collecting Demiguises, you can improve Alohamora to levels II and III, allowing you to open higher-level locks and get more gear and treasure.

Depulso

While Accio and Levioso are some of the basic support spells in Hogwarts Legacy, I’d say Depulso (blue) is the best intermediate utility spell. It is the force push to your force pull (Accio) and a finisher once you have every enemy airborne. As an exploration tool, it also allows you better access to tombs by activating specific switches.

How To Acquire: “Professor Sharp’s Assignment I” quest

You would need the Maxima, Edurus, and Focus Potions. If you haven’t used the Edurus potion you crafted during the potion tutorial, now would be a good time to do so. You can also purchase potions in Hogsmeade, but it’ll cost you some money, so the cheaper way to do that is to use crafting materials to brew your potions.

How To Improve: Under the Spells Talents screen, use a talent point to improve Depulso Mastery to add a knockback blast with the spell, effectively adding a form of crowd control. You can unlock this at level 5.

Confrigo

There are many attack spells (red) in Hogwarts Legacy that include slashing magic (Diffindo) and blasting magic (Bombarda). Out of these, none is as versatile as the intermediate Confrigo. It is a long-range fire spell that targets most enemies, breaks red shields, and targets those vulnerable to fire. As an exploration tool, you can light lamps from afar and also break open obstacles.

How To Acquire: “In The Shadow of Undercroft” quest

How To Improve: Under the Spells Talents screen, use a talent point of Confrigo Mastery to produce fiery bolts that seek enemy targets, granting it powerful AoE potential. You can do this at Level 5.

Glacius

There are quite a few spells that stop the enemy in Hogwarts Legacy, but none is as versatile as the intermediate spell Glacius, which casts frost magic on enemies. The stopping power is longer than spells of its type, plus next to Levioso, it has the best setup for an attack spell follow-up. Definitely one of the best spells in the game.

How To Acquire: “Madam Kogawa’s Assignment I” quest

To get this spell, you have to complete a balloon-popping task. Hop on your broom and fly around the Quidditch area near the Academy and around the train station near Hogsmeade. While you’re at it, it’s a great time to learn how to use that broom; it’s excellent for traversing far-off areas and has a great view to boot.

How To Improve: Under the Spells Talents screen, use a talent point for Glacius Mastery at Level 16. What this does is add splash frost damage when you cast it again with an enemy affected by Glacius, turning this support spell into a damage spell as well.

Curse Magic

Curse spells in Hogwarts Legacy are a no-no for some of the goody-two-shoes out there. However, if you want power, curses are where it’s at. Fortunately, most of them can be unlocked by going through with your Slytherin BFF Sebastian Sallow’s friendship quest. Tread lightly, because once learned, it cannot be unlearned.

How To Acquire: “In The Shadow of Time” and “In The Shadow of The Study” quests

These curses can be acquired during your friendship quest with Sebastian Sallow. In these two quests, there will come a time when Sebastian will offer to teach you the spell or he will cast the spell on you. I prefer not to experience pain, so I chose to learn it. It’s worth the karma because these curses are so powerful.

How To Improve: Under the Dark Arts Talent screen, you can use talent points for Crucio and Imperio Mastery when you reach level 16. Both curses connect to other enemies when used, adding splash damage to your arsenal.

Avada Kedavra

The curse spell to end all curse spells in Hogwarts Legacy. It is my personal favorite because of its AoE potential, plus it’s just straight-up badass. You can literally one-shot any enemy and while you can use it against Infamous Dark Magicians, you enter a quicktime event where you button mash against their counterspell.

How To Acquire: “In The Shadow of the Relic” (Level 29) quest

During your friendship quest with Sebastian Sallow, as you have done before with Crucio and Imperio, you can choose to learn the curse. If you have no issue learning this forbidden spell, go for it.

How To Improve: Under the Dark Arts Talent screen, you can use a talent point for Avada Kedavra Mastery, which allows you to kill all cursed enemies. If you have powered up your curses, it’s a powerful setup to finish with Avada Kedavra, one-shotting the playing field.

Extra Spell Slots

With an arsenal of magic in Hogwarts Legacy, you will be in need of extra magic slots to hold some of your best spells. It’s almost a requirement at this point. How you use the extra slots is up to you, but it really helps with putting your often-used spells within arm’s reach.

How To Acquire: Under Core Talents screen, use a talent point for Spell Knowledge at Level 5.

How To Improve: Under Core Talents screen, use talent points for Spell Knowledge II (Level 5) and Spell Knowledge III (Level 16).

With all these spells and more, feel free to experiment and explore to your heart’s content. It is the Wizarding World after all, and there’s nothing better than having the right spells to manipulate and use when the situation calls for it.
