Monster Hunter Rise headlines the lineup of March game releases

The game release calendar for March 2020 was particularly strong, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal leading the charge. However this year, due to unforeseen delays, it’s slim pickings. Never fear though, one of Nintendo Switch’s most anticipated exclusives Monster Hunter: Rise drops late March two months after the demo dropped on January.

One thing you’ll notice this month is that there are a lot of re-releases in the forms of remasters or next-gen ports for familiar games. Out of this group, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut stands out as the cream of the crop and for most console gamers, this will be the first time they’ll come across this indie classic that almost stole the Game of the Year award from everybody back in 2019. No final date has been announced yet though, so we’ll have to see if the release still holds for this month!

Without further ado, here are March’s new releases.

Pick of the Month: Disco Elysium Final Cut (PS4, PS5)

Release Date: TBC March 2021
Platform: PS5, PS4, Switch and Xbox later in the year.

Out of all the re-releases this March, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut stands out from the rest. To be fair, this will be the first time Disco Elysium will be releasing on consoles and based on information from a recent interview, there will be brand new content namely a fully voiced game and new Political Visions side quest that can permanently change the UI along with its already mind bending gameplay. For more details on its gameplay, check out my write-up from October!

Yakuza: Like A Dragon (PS5)

Release Date: March 2, 2021
Platform: Playstation 5

Yakuza: Like A Dragon finally receives its PS5 release and it’s about time because I’m so done with its slow loading times on the PS4! With next-gen support, I could restart this game with much less worry! This title continues the Ryu ga Gotoku saga coming off its predecessor Kiryu Kazuma with the endearing hero that is Kasuga Ichiban. Also it’s one of the best JRPGs that came out last year that ironically is revitalizing the genre. Check out our review here!

Apex Legends (Switch)

Release Date: March 9, 2021
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Two thoughts form in my head: It’s about time and how well is gonna run on the Switch hardware? Two years after its launch, Apex Legends finally makes their way to Nintendo Switch courtesy of port magicians Panic Button. I feel that the game actually comes at a very good time, with titles like Doom Eternal optimized to work properly for the Switch. Now you could take your Apex Legends on the go just in time for season 8.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time (PS5, Xbox Series, Switch)

Release Date: March 12, 2021
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

“It’s about time” that Crash Bandicoot finally makes its way to the Nintendo Switch, alongside the next-gen versions. Our review of Crash Bandicoot 4 calls it a “wumpin’ good time”, and while it is as good as a Crash game can get, it is also quite the challenge!

Marvel’s Avengers Operation Hawkeye: Future Imperfect (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, PC)

Release Date: March 18, 2021
Platform: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X|S

Looks like it’s not over for the Marvel’s Avengers as the next-gen port is finally out alongside the first major expansion, Operation Hawkeye: Future Imperfect. This expansion features new hero Hawkeye and the villain Maestro– an evil future version of the Hulk. Will this bring all the players back to this live service? When will Spiderman show up? Are you excited for the Snyder Cut? All these questions will hopefully be answered soon.

Hades Physical Release (Switch)

Release Date: March 19, 2021
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Holding off on Hades because you have no space on any of your microSDs? Don’t worry fam, Nintendo’s got you! On March 19, 2021, a physical release of last year’s Game of the Year contender will be out just in the time for the end of fiscal year and the Snyder Cut! Still need convincing about this game? Check out our review!

Balan Wonderworld (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch)

Release Date: March 26, 2021
Platform: Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X|S

Platformers that don’t fall under the mascot subgenre like Super Mario and Crash Bandicoot are hard to come by and when something like Balan Wonderworld comes into play, surely you have my attention. With various costumes to traverse a magical, psychedelic land, it reminds me more of Kid Chameleon (Do you remember that Genesis game? I do, because I’m old), rather than Nights as the latter jives with its visual direction, but the gameplay reminds me more of the former. Check out our demo impressions!

It Takes Two (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Switch, PC)

Release Date: March 26, 2021
Platform: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC

This looks like an interesting title from the creator of A Way Out. Again it’s one of those co-op action games that require two players (or yourself and the AI) to collaborate your way into this claymation adventure. Story-wise, it’s a tale of married couple losing luster with their relationship and in this adventure, they seek to rekindle such a relationship.

Pick of The Month 2: Monster Hunter: Rise (Switch)

Release Date: March 26, 2021
Platform: Nintendo Switch

Monster Hunter returns to a Nintendo platform after enjoying critical and commercial success with Monster Hunter: World. This Switch exclusive brings with it new monsters and new moves for all hunters, old and new. For fans of the Playstation 4 or Xbox One variant, you better save up some cash for a Switch or Switch Lite to continue your adventures.

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 (PS5 and Xbox Series)

Release Date: March 26, 2021
Platform: PS5, Xbox Series X

Tony Hawk teased this throughout the end of February with the launch of the title on next-gen systems with a future 2021 launch for the Switch. While there is an upgrade for the owners of the digital deluxe bundle, standard owners can purchase an upgrade key for $10USD.

Kingdom Hearts Franchise (PC)

Release Date: March 30, 2021
Platform: PC (exclusive to the Epic Games Store)

PC gamers finally get to experience the “magic” of Tetsuya Nomura as Kingdom Hearts makes its way to the PC for the first time. No steam launch though, as this will be an Epic Games Store exclusive! Check out the system requirements to see if you can run the game when it releases this month.
