Sony’s latest financial report has now been made public and reveals that the worldwide sales for the PlayStation 4 has now hit 112.3 million units, inching closer and closer to the Game Boy/Game Boy Color which stands at 118.69 million.

While the sales for the quarter have gone down by 1.3 million from the same time last year (which sold 3.2 million), PS Plus subscriptions have hit 45 million, which is a dramatic increase from last May, that can possibly be attributed to the prevailing COVID-19 conditions around the world, prompting players to go digital.

Interestingly, 74% of game sales for the quarter were digital, which received contributions from The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima, which became the fastest selling PS4 exclusive and the record holder for a new sales IP respectively.

This trend could continue all the way to the PlayStation 5, which revealed a digital version of the upcoming console, possibly being cheaper and the choice a lot of users will go for.

No price has been given for the PlayStation 5 yet, as the next State of Play event will feature PS4 and PS VR titles, which goes to show that Sony is still very much interested in keeping the PlayStation 4 supported even after the launch of the PlayStation 5.
