Cyberpunk 2077 dips to below 20fps on the base PS4, receives dismal user rating on Metacritic

Did you pick up Cyberpunk 2077 last week? Were you one of the 8 million preorders who are now enjoying the game? Enjoying might be the wrong word for some, as it seems that performance on the base PS4 consoles isn’t as good as players were expecting.

In fact, in a deep-dive analysis by industry gurus Digital Foundry, the game actually runs at 900p dynamic resolution, but really averages our at 720. What’s worse is that the frame rate dips to below 20fps, even hitting 15fps at some point during busy sequences.

That’s not exactly acceptable for something that has been under development for such a long time, although the game is definitely very ambitious to begin with.

Check out the full analysis below:

If you’re playing on a PS4 Pro, it does get better due to the power upgrade, but is still not something to write home about, with asset load and asset popup being some of the most frequent complaints.

The PS5 is obviously a different beast altogether, and it does perform smoothly at 60fps for the most part, but not everybody has a PS5 especially due to the limited stocks around the world, so last generation console players are left out to pick up the pieces.

The players have made their displeasure known, and have given the game a dismal user rating on Metacritic, scoring it a 2.6 spread out across 4,199 ratings. In fact, it even dipped to below 2.0 a few hours back.

This is, of course, not to say that the game is bad. It is CD Projekt Red after all, and they have the reputation and proof that they can indeed create masterpieces like The Witcher 3. Cyberpunk 2077 may be a masterpiece, but for now it is mired in a spectacular pile of crap that is not allowing it to shine as bright as it could.

Do you think CDPR should have delayed the game more to fix this? Should they just have released this on the PC and next-generation consoles, leaving out the PS4 and Xbox One despite their massive install base?

Cyberpunk 2077 is now available.
