‘The Last of Us’ Franchise Sells Over 37 Million Copies, Rumored Third Entry in Series Hinted
Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us Franchise has now sold over 37 million copies worldwide as of December 2022.
“To know that Joel, Ellie, and our whole cast of characters have been experienced and loved by so many of you drives the entire studio forward,” says Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog Co-President.
Elsewhere in the announcement, the company also shared a new sneak peek at concept artwork for their upcoming multiplayer game that’s currently in development.
“With a team led by Vinit Agarwal, Joe Pettinati, and Anthony Newman, the project is shaping up to be a fresh, new experience from our studio, but one rooted in Naughty Dog’s passion for delivering incredible stories, characters, and gameplay.”
Additionally, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Neil Druckmann seemingly hints at a possible third entry in The Last of Us series. Despite not outright saying that there’s indeed another game in the works, Druckmann simply says that “I think there’s more story to tell.”
Druckmann has previously stated back in 2021 that he and co-writer Haley Gross have written an outline for a story, though not being developed, that “explores a little bit what happens after this (The Last of Us Part II) game.” Druckmann also says that he hopes that it can “one day see the light of day.”
The Last of Us is scheduled to premiere on January 15, 2023 on HBO and HBO Max.
