The Wachowskis Once Asked Hideo Kojima to Make a Matrix Game, Kojima Says He Was Unaware of the Offer

In a nutshell

  • The Wachowskis reportedly asked Hideo Kojima to develop a Matrix video game, but Konami allegedly rejected the proposal.
  • Kojima acknowledged the story, prompting fan speculation about what a Kojima-directed Matrix could have looked like.

In what could have been one of the most significant missed collaboration opportunities of all time, a report from Time Extension states that the Wachowskis offered a Matrix game project to Hideo Kojima, but Konami shut it down.

The report from Time Extension cited claims from former Konami executive Christopher Bergstresser, who said the Wachowskis visited Konami HQ and expressed direct interest in Kojima leading a Matrix game project. However, Bergstresser claimed that Konami executive Kazumi Kitaue declined the offer on the spot, insisting that Kojima focus on Metal Gear Solid 2.

Hideo Kojima Says He Didn’t Know About the Matrix Game Pitch

Hideo Kojima addressed the recent reports, saying he was never informed of such a proposal.

“In all these 26 years, no one ever told me such a conversation had taken place.”

Kojima confirmed that while he did meet the Wachowskis during their promotional visit to Japan in 1999, there was no mention of a game offer during their interactions. He recalled attending a Famitsu interview, a Konami HQ visit, and the Japanese premiere of The Matrix, but emphasized that no formal pitch was ever communicated to him.

“At that time, I was already extremely busy with MGS2 and probably couldn’t have accepted the offer right away. But if someone had told me, maybe there could’ve been a way to make it work,” Kojima wrote.
