Inside Octopath Traveler 0 with Producer Hirohito Suzuki: Town Creation, New Combat, and No Gacha

Ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2025, we not only got the chance to play Octopatch Traveler 0 but also spoke to Producer Hirohito Suzuki, who explained how the team preserved Octopath’s emotional core while expanding the scope to include over 30 playable characters, a customizable protagonist, town‑building systems, new action skills, and a deliberate move away from gacha mechanics.

Design and balance with 30+ characters

Octopath Traveler 0 is the console port of the mobile game, Champions of the Continent, which featured mobile game mechanics and an expanded roster. Suzuki describes the core solution to roster scale as a design that prioritizes individuality and flexible progression.

“We have implemented the new feature, such as the selectability of the Action Skills. Through that, essentially, we make sure that each of the characters really has their own unique personalities and characteristics shine. And also enables our players to be able to complete the game with any character.”

The level design intentionally supports multiple viable party compositions, ensuring that players never feel forced into a single “correct” lineup.

Suzuki also elaborated on the removal of gacha mechanics, emphasizing the clear intent and fidelity to the series: “There is no gacha element feature in this game; this game is primarily geared towards matching the expectations or the standard of the console games that were seen in Octopath Traveler 1 & 2.”

The team spent substantial time ensuring the experience felt distinct from Champions of the Continent while preserving the story strengths that fans appreciated.

Emotional stakes and a Single Protagonist

Instead of implementing the same formula as the previous games, Octopath Traveler 0 takes a different route and features a lead protagonist that players will follow. Suzuki explains the narrative hook that grounds player investment: the game opens in a peaceful hometown that is “destroyed and put in ruins,” creating an emotional connection with the theme of restoration and, at times, vengeance.

“The protagonist doesn’t necessarily speak too much. However, because the story starts off in this place where this peaceful town that they were living in is now destroyed, that kind of ties into the theme of seeking vengeance.”

Path actions, recruitable NPCs, and town building

Octopath Traveler 0 expands the path action design and adds invite mechanics, allowing players to recruit many NPCs encountered across the world to populate their town, though not every NPC is recruitable. Suzuki explains that players will craft towns that “are full of life and unique to them,” with invited characters providing unique dialogue as the town grows.

Octopath Traveler 0 will also incentivize players who choose to engage with town building. “There are certainly rewards for those who continue to progress, or continue to do it. Essentially, even if you don’t necessarily need to do it in terms of completing the main story, it sort of rewards players by giving bonuses and rewards that make the actual journey itself a little bit easier.”

Examples include cooking for party buffs and a training ground that passively improves party members’ stats and experience.

Story connections and play order

As with other games, game numbering doesn’t necessarily indicate the proper order for playing a series. In this case, Octopath Traveler 0, or the Octopath series, is quite flexible. Suzuki recommends entry points based on the players’ preferences.

“My frank answer for that is I would recommend any of those patterns on my end or any of those play orders on my end. I think you can enjoy it by starting with Octopath Traveler 0 and then moving on to the other installments of the series. Or vice versa as well.”

This title is a prequel set on the same continent as the original, with roughly 30–40% of the main story new compared to Champions of the Continent, allowing returning players to spot connections while newcomers can jump in easily.

New systems and onboarding

Given that Octopath Traveler 0 could be the first game in the series that some players engage with, the game needed to provide proper onboarding to familiarize players with its systems. Mechanics, such as Action Skills, are unlocked gradually to avoid overwhelming newcomers. Suzuki stresses that the early sections are intentionally straightforward, helping players learn JRPG fundamentals before facing the deeper systems later.

“The goal is that as players enjoy and progress through that very straightforward and simple experience, from there they’re able to become more accustomed to and acclimated to the JRPG formula.”

Closing message

Fans of the Octopath series are understandably excited for Octopath Traveler 0, and Suzuki has expressed the same enthusiasm to see players get into the game and share their creativity.

“This latest installment of Octopath Traveler 0 is a story that essentially takes place in Osterra, which is the same continent as Octopath Traveler 1. From there, the player themselves can really experience and create their own story. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the various towns that the players themselves made.”
