Metacritic has revealed its 16th annual publisher rankings, and Square Enix has taken the No. 1 spot for 2025.
The Japanese publisher earned the highest average score across its slate of releases, with several titles classified as “good” by Metacritic’s standards, finishing the year with an average Metacritic score of 84.
Square Enix Key Releases for 2025
Among the standout games that boosted Square Enix’s ranking were Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI (PC release), Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, and Octopath Traveler 0, among others.
The average Metacritic score of Square Enix jumped by 5 points from its previous score. SEGA was the top publisher last year, followed by Capcom, Sony, and Microsoft in previous years.
